Any book on the neurology of AIDS is probably doomed to leg behind the fast-changing clinical and mearch picture of this fatal retroviral illness. This book, however, does remarkably well in updating the reader on the recent advances in characterization of the major neurologic complications of AIDS-infectious and neoplastic. It includes references to articlea published jut a few month prior to the book’s own publication date. AIDS and the Nervous System contains chapters on areas of the nervous syatem targeted by the AIDS virue: central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and eye. In addition, it subdivides neurologic complications into those caused by viral and nonviral infections as well as primary HIV infection alone. As an introduction, the editors present sobering statistical forecasts on the prevalence of AIDS, which, assuming no change in the epidemiology of the disease and no effective therapy, will be the fourth leading cause of death in the US by 1991. The yearly incidence of HIV encephalopathy, the most common neurologic manifestation, will far exceed the yearly incidence of multiple sclerosis by the same year. Because the editors are West Coast-based, the bulk of their statistics are derived from the best-studied risk group for HIV infection: homosexual men. There is less information on the spectrum of dieegee in IV drug abusers and almost none on AIDS in women and pregnancy-in fairness, arean where, as yet, few data are available. In addition, there is no discussion of HIV myopathy. But, in general, this book is an invaluable reference for neurologists and internista. It is a thorough overview of an illness which has, or will, become a part of the practice of neurology in the 198oa.

Virtual reality applications can enhance the education and training of students with learning disabilities, along with their quality of life. Virtual worlds offer opportunities for creating a highly interactive, complex simulation. Modeling and scripting tools can be applied in these worlds. Providing functionalities for managing presentations, administration as well as assessment of coursework in an educational context, virtual learning environments support teaching and learning in schools. Learning disabilities such as “dyslexia, dyscalculia, attention issues (ADHD), and disability in retrieving information”, which students need to do physics experiments, are a major source of concern since they impair a person’s ability to learn. Traditional teaching methods do not appear to support the same thought in the situation of students with learning disabilities, who normally need a significant investment of time, money, and people for individual tutoring. Students with this problem have difficulty envisioning or visualizing what they are being taught, in addition to breaking down and processing the material. To address the above issues, this paper develops and evaluates a 3D virtual physics laboratory to improve cognitive skills in physics experiments for students with learning disabilities. The environment is created based on specially designed criteria for disabled students. The study proves the effectiveness of the 3D virtual environment in improving the cognitive skills in the physics of students with learning disabilities.

Technologies to support the diagnosis and/or treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review

In new era of emerging technologies, diagnosing the neurodevelopmental disorders at the primitive stage has led to a rise in the development of automated diagnostic systems. Socio-behavioral disorder (SBD),a subtype of NDDs, being amongst the most complex behavioral impairments is the root cause for disability, specifically in young children. Under the term SBD, falls a group of heterogeneous disorders; Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) whose diagnosis remains a challenging task due to the spectrum of conditions associated to it and also due to their high comorbidity with each other. Traditional based recognition of SBD is based on qualitative parameters which make diagnosis more time consuming. Hence, diagnosis of SBD is a preeminent area that demands deliberations from the researchers, scientists as well as academicians to introduce more automated diagnostic systems based on quantitative parameters that not only provides reliability and accuracy besides affordable for everyone. Motivated by these facts,this article seeks to provide a thorough investigation of efforts on the subject of automated diagnostic systems using artificial intelligence techniques based on quantitative parameters (biomarkers and multimodal data) for early ASD or ADHD detection. An extensive survey of AI based diagnostic systems for ASD, ADHD are also presented. Furthermore, the studies of various automated AI based diagnostic systems for the detection of ASD, ADHD and ASD+ADHD are presented in this research work. Finally, this article highlights the open issues existing in the literature that needs to be explored further for providing more effective SBD analysis and also presented an outline of the proposed work which will be an aid in the diagnostic field of ASD, ADHD and comorbid ASD.

Artificial Intelligence Based Techniques for the Detection of Socio-Behavioral Disorders: A Systematic Review

Inclusion, equality, and well-being for all, especially for people with special needs and disabilities, is globally recognized as a priority. At the same time, there is an urgent need to create digital training environments for people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Virtual reality (VR) and gaming technologies have entered the race at full speed for skills training. Despite significant research on each of these technologies, there is still limited knowledge about the effectiveness of virtual reality games (VRGs) in targeted groups such as those with SEND. Thus, the current systematic review paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of gaming in virtual reality as an intervention strategy for meta-skills training among people with neurodevelopmental, cognitive disorders, and learning difficulties. The PRISMA 2020 methodology was used to respond to the objective and research questions. This study also emphasizes the mediating role of motivations, metacognition, and emotional intelligence as important assets for meta-skills development. The database search generated 1100 records, and 26 studies met the inclusion criteria. This study concludes that VRGs have the potential to support people with SEND in terms of raising motivation and developing metacognitive skills, as well as in developing the emotional intelligence skills needed for inclusion, accomplishment, an independent life, and personal well-being. As was observed, VRGs provided the subjects with positive experiences, allowing them to internalize motivations and—with less effort—develop self-motivated, self-regulated, and flexible behaviors.

VR Gaming for Meta-Skills Training in Special Education: The Role of Metacognition, Motivations, and Emotional Intelligence

Purpose. Visual-motor integration is a good indicator of a child’s overall developmental and functional level. This study investigated the combined effects of virtual reality (VR) and computer game-based cognitive therapy on the development of visual-motor integration in children with intellectual disabilities. Methods. The study used a single-group pre-post study design and 13 children with intellectual disabilities who were recruited from a community rehabilitation center participated in the study. We used the Wii VR video game and the CoTras computer game to deliver cognitive therapy over 12 sessions. The Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-2 (BOT-2) was used to evaluate motor function related to visual-motor integration to identify changes in function, and the Developmental Test of Visual Perception-2 (DTVP-2) was used to assess changes in visual perception function associated with visual-motor integration. Results. The VR and computer game-based cognitive therapy has shown significant difference in total standard score of BOT-2 associated with visual-motor integration representing improved motor function ( ). Comparison of the DTVP-2 scores showed the significant difference in visual-motor integration of spatial relation and visual-motor speed ( ), motor-reduced visual perception ( ), and general visual perception ( ). Conclusions. Results of this study provide useful evidence supporting the possibility of combined VR and computer game-based cognitive therapy for children with intellectual disabilities.

Combined Effects of Virtual Reality and Computer Game-Based Cognitive Therapy on the Development of Visual-Motor Integration in Children with Intellectual Disabilities: A Pilot Study.

Objectives. Negative behavioral problems often occur following the onset of neurodevelopmental disorders and have an overall impact on the affected children, specifically in terms of their social developmental level. In children, social development behavior has been shown to spontaneously mature over time with the cognitive therapy intervention effects. This study performed a meta-analysis to provide a statistical synopsis of the available evidence of social development behavioral changes following cognitive therapy in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Methods. Data was collected from two online search engines, including EBSCOhost and PubMed, from January 1, 2006, to August 31, 2016, using the terms “cognition,” “cognitive function,” and “disease including neurodevelopmental disorder with DSM-5.” Two assessors searched the literature using independent inclusion criteria and evaluated the quality of results using the Jadad score. Six articles were chosen using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis program (version 2.0). Results. Six articles reporting randomized controlled trial studies were included. The effective scores for improving adaptive behavior following cognitive therapy in children with neurodevelopmental disorder were 0.64. The effective score of adaptive behavior was significant in this study ( ). The results showed no significant statistical heterogeneity and publication bias. Conclusions. The findings of the meta-analysis suggest that cognitive interventions are effective at improving adaptive behavior associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.
