Electrical conductivity and interfacial polarization are two crucial factors to design high-performance electromagnetic absorption (EMA) materials, but how to synergistically balance these factors still remains to be difficult. In this work, we report the synthesis of Cu/C nanocomposites via the controlled pyrolysis of a MOF-guest complex. The prepared Cu/C nanocomposites are made up of cross-linked carbon network and various irregular particles. The carbon network provides appropriate electrical conductivity to contribute to the conductance loss. Multiple heterogeneous interfaces, such as Mo2C/C, Mo2C/CuO, CuO/C, Mo2C/Cu, and Cu/C interfaces, have been determined in these Cu/C nanocomposites, resulting in obviously improved polarization loss. As a result, the Cu/C nanocomposite exhibits excellent EMA performance, where the efficient absorption bandwidth reaches 6.8 GHz, and the maximal absorption gets to −52 dB. This research provides new idea to design high-performance EMA nanocomposites by tuning the electrical conductivity and interfacial polarization.

A New Era of Metal–Organic Framework Nanomaterials and Applications

Study and application of MIL-100(Fe)-based two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite was limited because the nucleation of the spherical structure of MIL-100(Fe) on GO along different directions hindered the formation of MOF-100(Fe). To address this issue, MIL-100(Fe)/three-dimensional graphene (3DG) nanocomposites (abbreviated as MIL-3DG-n, n = 25, 50, 75, and 100) were successfully fabricated via in situ growth of MIL-100(Fe) on 3DG matrixes in this work because the unique structure of 3DG can avoid the attachment with MIL-100(Fe) on nucleation sites along multiple directions, resulting in their ideal combination. The prepared MIL-3DG nanocomposites exhibited higher peroxidase-like catalytic activities than pure MIL-100(Fe), and MIL-3DG-75 exhibited the best peroxidase-like activities for detecting xanthine with the detection limit of 0.0014 μM in the linear range of 0–200 μM to date, to the best of our knowledge, which is attributed to the higher affinity of MIL-3DG-75 nanocomposite to peroxidase substrates o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and H2O2, confirmed by the Michaelis–Menten kinetics (Vm: 49.5 × 10–8 M s–1 for H2O2, 18 × 10–8 M s–1 for OPD, Km: 0.029 mM for H2O2, 0.011 mM for OPD). Owing to the high catalytic efficiency of the MIL-3DG-75 nanocomposite, a rapid and efficient strategy for the sensitive colorimetric detection of xanthine was established.

MIL-100(Fe) Metal–Organic Framework Nanospheres Embedded in Graphene Matrixes for Xanthine Fluorescence Sensing

We demonstrate an approach based on substituting a magnetic cation with a carefully chosen isovalent non-magnetic cation to derive catalytic activity from otherwise catalytically inactive magnetic materials. Using the model system considered, the results illustratively present that the catalytically inactive but highly magnetic strontium hexaferrite (SrFe12O19; SFO) system can be transformed into a catalytically active system by simply replacing some of the magnetic cation Fe3+ by a non-magnetic cation Al3+ in the octahedral coordination environment in the SFO nanocrystals. The intrinsic SFO and Al-doped SrFe12O19 (SrFe11.5Al0.5O19; Al–SFO) nanomaterials were synthesized using a simple, eco-friendly tartrate-gel technique, followed by thermal annealing at 850 °C for 2 h. The SFO and Al–SFO were thoroughly characterized for their structure, phase, morphology, chemical bonding, and magnetic characteristics using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry techniques. Catalytic performance evaluated toward 4-nitrophenol, which is the toxic contaminant at pharmaceutical industries, reduction reaction using NaBH4 (mild reducing agent), the Al-doped SFO samples exhibit a reasonably good performance compared to intrinsic SFO. The results indicate that the catalytic activity of Al–SFO is due to Al-ions occupying the octahedral sites of the hexaferrite lattice; as these sites are on the surface of the catalyst, they facilitate electron transfer. Furthermore, surface/interface characteristics of nanocrystalline Al–SFO coupled with magnetic properties facilitate the catalyst recovery by simple, inexpensive methods while readily allowing the reusability. Moreover, the activity remains the same even after five successive cycles of experiments. Deriving the catalytic activity from otherwise inactive compounds as demonstrated in the optimized, engineered nanoarchitecture of Al-doped-Sr-hexaferrite may be useful in adopting the approach in exploring further options and designing inexpensive and recyclable catalytic materials for future energy and environmental technologies.

Aluminum Doping and Nanostructuring Enabled Designing of Magnetically Recoverable Hexaferrite Catalysts

Three-dimensional porous carbon-based materials from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been proven useful in structural mechanical and catalytic applications due to the high specific surface area and excellent electron transport property. However, introducing and loading of metal catalytic sites on MOF-derived porous carbon-based materials always involves complex multistep synthetic processes and unwarrantable catalyst sites with high catalytic activity. Here, we have developed a facile Mo-doping-assisted strategy to construct a highly active nanorod with Ni-based catalyst nanoparticles from a MOF (MCF-61). Carbon-Based Nanorod Catalysts for Nitrophenol Reduction

Three-dimensional carbon-based porous materials have proven to be quite useful for tailoring material properties in the energy conservation and environmental protection applications. In view of the three-dimensional and well-defined structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a novel carbon-based magnetic porous material (HKUST-Fe3O4) has been designed and constructed by MOF-guest interactions of high-temperature pyrolysis. The obtained HKUST-Fe3O4 exhibited the unique features of superparamagnetism, a macro/mesoporous structure, environmental protection (inexistence of toxic heavy metal ions), and physicochemical stability and has shown high adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption for carcinogenic organic pollutants (for example, rhodamine B) with an environmentally friendly character and excellent reusability. We demonstrate that the unique/superior advantages of HKUST-Fe3O4 could meet the requirements of environment cleaning, especially for removing the targeted organic pollutant from water. Moreover, the specific HKUST-Fe3O4 and organic pollutant interaction mechanism has been analyzed in detail via parameter-free calculations. This study proposes a promising strategy for constructing novel carbon-based magnetic nanomaterials for various applications, not limitated to pollutant removal.
