The Kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) have received enormous attention due to their nontrivial topological electronic structure, anomalous physical properties and superconductivity. Unconventional charge density wave (CDW) has been detected in AV3Sb5. High-precision electronic structure determination is essential to understand its origin. Here we unveil electronic nature of the CDW phase in our high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on KV3Sb5. We have observed CDW-induced Fermi surface reconstruction and the associated band folding. The CDW-induced band splitting and the associated gap opening have been revealed at the boundary of the pristine and reconstructed Brillouin zones. The Fermi surface- and momentum-dependent CDW gap is measured and the strongly anisotropic CDW gap is observed for all the V-derived Fermi surface. In particular, we have observed signatures of the electron-phonon coupling in KV3Sb5. These results provide key insights in understanding the nature of the CDW state and its interplay with superconductivity in AV3Sb5 superconductors.

Electronic nature of charge density wave and electron-phonon coupling in kagome superconductor KV3Sb5

The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) exhibit diverse correlated phenomena, which are intertwined with a topological electronic structure with multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the vicinity of the Fermi level. As the VHSs with their large density of states enhance correlation effects, it is of crucial importance to determine their nature and properties. Here, we combine polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory to directly reveal the sublattice properties of 3d-orbital VHSs in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Four VHSs are identified around the M point and three of them are close to the Fermi level, with two having sublattice-pure and one sublattice-mixed nature. Remarkably, the VHS just below the Fermi level displays an extremely flat dispersion along MK, establishing the experimental discovery of higher-order VHS. The characteristic intensity modulation of Dirac cones around K further demonstrates the sublattice interference embedded in the electronic structure. The crucial insights into the electronic structure, revealed by our work, provide a solid starting point for the understanding of the intriguing correlation phenomena in the kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Rich Nature of Van Hove Singularities in Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The quasi two-dimensional (quasi-2D) kagome materials AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) were found to be a prime example of kagome superconductors, a new quantum platform to investigate the interplay between electron correlation effects, topology and geometric frustration. In this review, we report recent progress on the experimental and theoretical studies of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ and provide a broad picture of this fast-developing field in order to stimulate an expanded search for unconventional kagome superconductors. We review the electronic properties of AV$_3$Sb$_5$, the experimental measurements of the charge density wave state, evidence of time-reversal symmetry breaking, and other potential hidden symmetry breaking in these materials. A variety of theoretical proposals and models that address the nature of the time-reversal symmetry breaking are discussed. Finally, we review the superconducting properties of AV$_3$Sb$_5$, especially the potential pairing symmetries and the interplay between superconductivity and the charge density wave state.

Kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs)

In the kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), three-dimensional charge order is the primary instability that sets the stage for other collective orders to emerge, including unidirectional stripe order, orbital flux order, electronic nematicity and superconductivity. Here, we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine the microscopic structure of three-dimensional charge order in AV3Sb5 and its interplay with superconductivity. Our approach is based on identifying an unusual splitting of kagome bands induced by three-dimensional charge order, which provides a sensitive way to refine the spatial charge patterns in neighbouring kagome planes. We found a marked dependence of the three-dimensional charge order structure on composition and doping. The observed difference between CsV3Sb5 and the other compounds potentially underpins the double-dome superconductivity in CsV3(Sb,Sn)5 and the suppression of Tc in KV3Sb5 and RbV3Sb5. Our results provide fresh insights into the rich phase diagram of AV3Sb5. Charge order landscape and competition with superconductivity in kagome metals

Transition-metal-based kagome materials at van Hove filling are a rich frontier for the investigation of novel topological electronic states and correlated phenomena. To date, in the idealized two-dimensional kagome lattice, topologically Dirac surface states (TDSSs) have not been unambiguously observed, and the manipulation of TDSSs and van Hove singularities (VHSs) remains largely unexplored. Here, we reveal TDSSs originating from a ℤ2 bulk topology and identify multiple VHSs near the Fermi level (EF) in magnetic kagome material GdV6Sn6. Using in situ surface potassium deposition, we successfully realize manipulation of the TDSSs and VHSs. The Dirac point of the TDSSs can be tuned from above to below EF, which reverses the chirality of the spin texture at the Fermi surface. These results establish GdV6Sn6 as a fascinating platform for studying the nontrivial topology, magnetism, and correlation effects native to kagome lattices. They also suggest potential application of spintronic devices based on kagome materials.

Topological surface states and flat bands in the kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5

The diversity of emergent phenomena in quantum materials often arises from the interplay between different physical energy scales or broken symmetries. Cooperative interactions among them are rare; however, when they do occur, they often stabilize fundamentally new ground states or phase behaviors. For instance, a pair density wave can form when the superconducting order parameter borrows spatial periodical variation from charge order; a topological superconductor can arise when topologically nontrivial electronic states proximitize with or participate in the formation of the superconducting condensate. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence for a unique synergy of topology and correlation effects in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ - one where topologically nontrivial surface states are pushed below the Fermi energy (E$_F$) by charge order, making the topological physics active near E$_F$ upon entering the superconducting state. Flat bands are observed, indicating that electron correlation effects are also at play in this system. Our results reveal the peculiar electronic structure of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, which holds the potential for realizing Majorana zero modes and anomalous superconducting states in kagome lattices. They also establish CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a unique platform for exploring the cooperation between the charge order, topology, correlation effects and superconductivity.

Charge-order-assisted topological surface states and flat bands in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The synthesis and characterization of vanadium-based kagome metals YV$_6$Sn$_6$ and GdV$_6$Sn$_6$ are presented. X-ray diffraction, magnetization, magnetotransport, and heat capacity measurements reveal an ideal kagome network of V-ions coordinated by Sn and separated by triangular lattice planes of rare-earth ions. The onset of low-temperature, likely noncollinear, magnetic order of Gd spins is detected in GdV$_6$Sn$_6$, while V-ions in both compounds remain nonmagnetic. Density functional theory calculations are presented modeling the band structures of both compounds, which can be classified as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metals in the paramagnetic state. Both compounds exhibit high mobility, multiband transport and present an interesting platform for controlling the interplay between magnetic order associated with the $R$-site sublattice and nontrivial band topology associated with the V-based kagome network. Our results invite future exploration of other $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$=rare earth) variants where this interplay can be tuned via $R$-site substitution.

Study of the electronic properties of topological kagome metals YV$_6$Sn$_6$ and GdV$_6$Sn$_6$

The new two-dimensional (2D) kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ has attracted much recent attention due to the coexistence of superconductivity, charge order, topology and kagome physics. A key issue in this field is to unveil the unique reconstructed electronic structure, which successfully accommodates different orders and interactions to form a fertile ground for emergent phenomena. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) evidence for two distinct band reconstructions in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The first one is characterized by the appearance of new electron energy band at low temperature. The new band is theoretically reproduced when the three dimensionality of the charge order is considered for a band-folding along the out-of-plane direction. The second reconstruction is identified as a surface induced orbital-selective shift of the electron energy band. Our results provide the first evidence for the three dimensionality of the charge order in single-particle spectral function, highlighting the importance of long-range out-of-plane electronic correlations in this layered kagome superconductor. They also point to the feasibility of orbital-selective control of the band structure via surface modification, which would open a new avenue for manipulating exotic phenomena in this system, including superconductivity.
