Nanostructures have attracted huge interest as a rapidly growing class of materials for many applications. Several techniques have been used to characterize the size, crystal structure, elemental composition and a variety of other physical properties of nanoparticles. In several cases, there are physical properties that can be evaluated by more than one technique. Different strengths and limitations of each technique complicate the choice of the most suitable method, while often a combinatorial characterization approach is needed. In addition, given that the significance of nanoparticles in basic research and applications is constantly increasing, it is necessary that researchers from separate fields overcome the challenges in the reproducible and reliable characterization of nanomaterials, after their synthesis and further process (e.g. annealing) stages. The principal objective of this review is to summarize the present knowledge on the use, advances, advantages and weaknesses of a large number of experimental techniques that are available for the characterization of nanoparticles. Different characterization techniques are classified according to the concept/group of the technique used, the information they can provide, or the materials that they are destined for. We describe the main characteristics of the techniques and their operation principles and we give various examples of their use, presenting them in a comparative mode, when possible, in relation to the property studied in each case.

Characterization techniques for nanoparticles: comparison and complementarity upon studying nanoparticle properties

Optical pumping with laser light can be used to polarize the nuclear spins of gaseous xenon-129. When hyperpolarized xenon-129 is dissolved in liquids, a time-dependent departure of the proton spin polarization from its thermal equilibrium is observed. The variation of the magnetization is an unexpected manifestation of the nuclear Overhauser effect, a consequence of cross-relaxation between the spins of solution protons and dissolved xenon-129. Time-resolved magnetic resonance images of both nuclei in solution show that the proton magnetization is selectively perturbed in regions containing spin-polarized xenon-129. This effect could find use in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of surfaces and proteins and in magnetic resonance imaging.

Enhancement of Solution NMR and MRI by Laser-Polarized Xenon

Air-stable and homogeneous gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, 1a–5a) ligated by various secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs), [R1R2P(O)H] (R1 = Naph, R2 = tBu, L1; R1 = R2 = Ph, L2; R1 = Ph, R2 = Naph, L3; R1 = R2 = Et, L4; R1 = R2 = Cy, L5; R1 = R2 = tBu, L6), with different electronic and steric properties were synthesized via NaBH4 reduction of the corresponding Au(I)–SPO complex. These easily accessible ligands allow the formation of well dispersed and small nanoparticles (size 1.2–2.2 nm), which were characterized by the use of a wide variety of techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV–vis, energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR), and cross polarization magic angle spinning (CP MAS) NMR spectroscopy. Air-Stable Gold Nanoparticles Ligated by Secondary Phosphine Oxides as Catalyst for the Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Substituted Aldehydes: a Remarkable Ligand Effect.

Development of well-defined heterogeneous catalysts requires detailed structural characterization of active sites, an essential step toward establishing structure–activity relationships and promoting rational designs of catalysts. Solid-state NMR has emerged as a powerful approach to provide key molecular-level information about active-site structures and dynamics in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we describe how one can apply solid-state NMR, ranging from 1D chemical shift assignments (and additional parameters, CQ and η, for quadrupolar nuclei, I > 1/2) to 2D correlations, to analysis of chemical shift anisotropy, providing unprecedented structural information about a broad range of materials. We also describe how modern hyperpolarization techniques like dynamic nuclear polarization can be used to improve the sensitivity of NMR, and make various challenging 1D/2D NMR experiments feasible, thus paving the way to determine the structures of surface sites.

Active Sites in Supported Single-Site Catalysts: An NMR Perspective.

Multi-stimuli responsive materials based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), especially using non-conventional stimuli including light, still need more explorations, to fulfill the requirements of complicated application environments. The structure determination of functional groups on the CNC surface constitutes a significant challenge, partially due to their low amounts. In this study, rhodamine spiroamide groups are immobilized onto the surface of CNCs leading to a hybrid compound being responsive to pH-values, heat and UV light. After the treatment with external stimuli, the fluorescent and correlated optical color change can be induced, which refers to a ring opening and closing process. Amine and amide groups in rhodamine spiroamide play the critical role in this switching process. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy coupled with sensitivity-enhanced dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) was used to measure 13C and 15N in natural abundance, allowing the determination of structural changes during the switching process. It is shown that a temporary bond through an electrostatic interaction could be formed within the confined environment on the CNC surface during the heat treatment. The carboxyl groups on the CNC surface play a pivotal role in stabilizing the open status of rhodamine spiroamide groups.
