Beetles have developed the elytra that are interesting and impressive strategy for thriving in their native environments. The elytra, although formed from simple biopolymer constituents, take on many effective designs. In present work, internal structure of elytra is discussed and three bionic structures named as the bio-inspired honeycomb column thin-walled structure (BHTS) are proposed. Then the crushing behavior and energy absorption characteristics of the BHTS under axial impact loading are investigated by numerical simulation. This study reveals not only the relationship between the adding mode and energy absorption characteristics, but also the influence of column diameter on the BHTS. The findings show that the BHTS represents a significant improvement over honeycomb structures and show potential applications in the field of protective equipment.

The bricks and mortar in the classic structure of nacre have characteristic geometry, aspect ratios and relative proportions; these key parameters can be retained while scaling down the absolute length scale by more than 1 order of magnitude. The results shed light on fundamental scaling behavior and provide new opportunities for high performance, yet ductile, lightweight nanocomposites. Reproducing the toughening mechanisms of nacre at smaller length scales allows a greater volume of interface per unit volume while simultaneously increasing the intrinsic properties of the inorganic constituents. Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) polyelectrolyte and well-defined [Mg2Al(OH)6]CO3.nH2O layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets produces a dense, oriented, high inorganic content (∼90 wt %) nanostructure resembling natural nacre, but at a shorter length scale. The smaller building blocks enable the (self-) assembly of a higher quality nanostructure than conventional mimics, leading to improved mechanical properties, matching those of natural nacre, while allowing for substantial plastic deformation. Both strain hardening and crack deflection mechanisms were observed in situ by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) during nanoindentation. The best properties emerge from an ordered nanostructure, generated using regular platelets, with narrow size dispersion.

Present work reports on Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA) of HDPE reinforced with surface modified 0D (Nanodiamonds-NDs), 1D (Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes-MWCNTs) and 2D (Graphite nanoplatelets-GNPs) nanofillers. Composite samples were prepared using twin screw injection moulding machine. Dynamic properties like storage, loss modulus and tan delta were investigated as a function of temperature and at constant oscillation of 1 Hz. Optimum properties were exhibited by 0.1 CNT/HDPE during a temperature swept from 30 to 110 oC. The storage modulus and loss modulus of 0.1 CNT/HDPE increased by 57 and 28% on comparison with pure HDPE. 0.1 CNT/HDPE exhibited highest ascent during tan delta evaluation confirming good damping property. TEM analysis was carried out to investigate the morphology of ND, MWCNT and GNP.
