The Internet of Things era has promoted enormous research on sensors, communications, data fusion, and actuators. Among them, sensors are a prerequisite for acquiring the environmental information for delivering to an artificial data center to make decisions. The MXene-based sensors have aroused tremendous interest because of their extraordinary performances. In this review, the electrical, electronic, and optical properties of MXenes are first introduced. Next, the MXene-based sensors are discussed according to the sensing mechanisms such as electronic, electrochemical, and optical methods. Initially, biosensors are introduced based on chemiresistors and field-effect transistors. Besides, the wearable pressure sensor is demonstrated with piezoresistive devices. Third, the electrochemical methods include amperometry and electrochemiluminescence as examples. In addition, the optical approaches refer to surface plasmonic resonance and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Moreover, the prospects are delivered of multimodal data fusion toward complicated human-like senses. Eventually, future opportunities for MXene research are conveyed in the new material discovery, structure design, and proof-of-concept devices.

Toward Smart Sensing by MXene.

A laboratory test method for evaluating ice adhesion has been developed employing a commercially available instrument normally used for dynamic mechanical analysis (TA RSA-III). This is the first laboratory ice adhesion test that does not require a custom-built apparatus. The upper grip range of ∼10 mm is an enabling feature that is essential for the test. The method involves removal of an ice cylinder from a polymer coating with a probe and the determination of peak removal force (Ps). To validate the test method, the strength of ice adhesion was determined for a prototypical glassy polymer, poly(methyl methacrylate). The distance of the probe from the PMMA surface has been identified as a critical variable for Ps. The new test provides a readily available platform for investigating fundamental surface characteristics affecting ice adhesion. In addition to the ice release test, PMMA coatings were characterized using DSC, DCA, and TM-AFM.

Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Polymer Nanocomposites for Sustainable Biomedical Applications: A review

Various diseases increasingly challenge the health status and life quality of human beings. Volatolome emitted from patients has been considered as a potential family of markers, volatolomics, for diagnosis/screening. There are two fundamental issues of volatolomics in healthcare. On one hand, the solid relationship between the volatolome and specific diseases needs to be clarified and verified. On the other hand, effective methods should be explored for the precise detection of volatolome. Several comprehensive review articles had been published in this field. However, a timely and systematical summary and elaboration is still desired. In this review article, the research methodology of volatolomics in healthcare is critically considered and given out, at first. Then, the sets of volatolome according to specific diseases through different body sources and the analytical instruments for their identifications are systematically summarized. Thirdly, the advanced electronic nose and photonic nose technologies for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection are well introduced. The existed obstacles and future perspectives are deeply thought and discussed. This article could give a good guidance to researchers in this interdisciplinary field, not only understanding the cutting-edge detection technologies for doctors (medicinal background), but also making reference to clarify the choice of aimed VOCs during the sensor research for chemists, materials scientists, electronics engineers, etc.

2D MXene nanocomposites: electrochemical and biomedical applications

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted great attentions in the field of electronics, sensors, healthcare, and energy conversion. Such emerging applications have driven the carbon nanotube research in a rapid fashion. Indeed, the structure control over CNTs has inspired an intensive research vortex due to the high promises in electronic and optical device applications. Here, this in-depth review is anticipated to provide insights into the controllable synthesis and applications of high-quality CNTs. First, the general synthesis and post-purification of CNTs are briefly discussed. Then, the state-of-the-art electronic device applications are discussed, including field-effect transistors, gas sensors, DNA biosensors, and pressure gauges. Besides, the optical sensors are delivered based on the photoluminescence. In addition, energy applications of CNTs are discussed such as thermoelectric energy generators. Eventually, future opportunities are proposed for the Internet of Things (IoT) oriented sensors, data processing, and artificial intelligence.

Emerging Internet of Things driven carbon nanotubes-based devices

This paper summarizes the test method of ice-phobic coating adhesion strength and the progress in coating material. Ice adhesion strength of several commercial ice-phobic coatings were tested for Pratt & Whitney, and result indicated that reformative silicone R-2180 show significantly improved reduction in ice adhesion when compared to several different commercially available silicone-based ice-phobic coatings. It would be valuable in future studies to measure the surface energies of the several materials tested to determine any correlation between the ice adhesion and surface energy of the coating.
