Strategic progress in foam stabilisation towards high-performance foam concrete for building sustainability: A state-of-the-art review

Globally, various solid wastes are produced and stockpiled in large quantities, causing serious environmental, social, and economic problems. Foamed concrete has attracted worldwide attention because of its excellent functional properties. Incorporating recycled waste and byproducts into foamed concrete is considered a win–win strategy for sustainable waste management and green transformation of foamed concrete. However, the reviews of alternative forms of different wastes/byproducts and their effects on foamed concrete are limited, which has hindered the promotion of this concept. Therefore, this paper compiles and reviews the reuse potential of various types of waste and byproducts as cementitious materials, aggregates, and modifier replacements. Together with the chemical and physical properties of the waste byproducts, the effects of different waste/by-product substitution pathways on the properties, pore structure, hydration products, and carbon emission reduction of foamed concrete were comprehensively evaluated. Our findings are important for guiding the rational introduction of wastes/byproducts and optimizing the combination of the inherent characteristics of waste byproducts and the requirements of foamed concrete. Furthermore, this review also discusses the challenges and development directions of waste-based foam concrete. This study provides an important basis and guidance for sustainable waste management, and low-carbon foamed concrete manufacturing. 

Recent advances in sustainable lightweight foamed concrete incorporating recycled waste and byproducts: A review

The quenching process has the characteristics of complex pollutant composition, high purification difficulty, and serious environmental pollution. In order to meet the national emission standards, the coke quenching tail gas containing SO2 must be treated. In this paper, halloysite is selected as carrier, modified by low-temperature molten salt etching, manganese oxide is supported by hydrothermal method, halloysite is formed by chitosan gel microspheres, and then SO2 treatment experiments are carried out. The results show that: The manganese is loaded by hydrothermal reaction, and its oxides are mainly MnO 2, Mn2O3, MnO. When the hydrothermal temperature is 180 °C, the metal loading ratio is 5%, and the hydrothermal reaction is 24 h, the SO2 removal efficiency is maintained at 79.47%, and the total desulfurization amount is 73.22 mg. The halloysite modified by molten salt etching undergoes hydrothermal metal loading. Its removal efficiency is 95.49%, and the total desulfurization amount is 87.98 mg.

Solid waste building material treatment is an essential means of disposal and an active research area. Despite this, the multisource characteristics, large volumes and complex compositions of solid waste necessitate new requirements for its treatment. In this paper, a typical resource-based coastal city is considered the research object. Fly ash (FA), furnace slag (FS) and mineral powder (MP) are taken as samples to investigate the influence of admixtures on the properties, pore structure and durability of foam concrete by three-factor and three-level orthogonal tests. Results indicate that foam concrete with different admixtures can have various mechanical and thermal insulation properties. The compressive strength of foam concrete can increase to 3.90 MPa, and its thermal conductivity can reach 0.1347 W/M·k. MP has the largest apparent effect on the compressive strength, while FS has the most obvious impact on the thermal conductivity. The durability analysis shows that the number of freeze-thaw cycles foam concrete can withstand is 25–100 cycles. The collaborative disposal of multisource inorganic solid waste has high potential for being applied as inner partition walls and thermal insulating components in buildings. This paper provides valuable guidance for the sustainable and clean utilization of multisource inorganic solid waste.
