All forms of energy follow the law of conservation of energy, by which they can be neither created nor destroyed. Light-to-heat conversion as a traditional yet constantly evolving means of converting light into thermal energy has been of enduring appeal to researchers and the public. With the continuous development of advanced nanotechnologies, a variety of photothermal nanomaterials have been endowed with excellent light harvesting and photothermal conversion capabilities for exploring fascinating and prospective applications. Herein we review the latest progresses on photothermal nanomaterials, with a focus on their underlying mechanisms as powerful light-to-heat converters. We present an extensive catalogue of nanostructured photothermal materials, including metallic/semiconductor structures, carbon materials, organic polymers, and two-dimensional materials. The proper material selection and rational structural design for improving the photothermal performance are then discussed. We also provide a representative overview of the latest techniques for probing photothermally generated heat at the nanoscale. We finally review the recent significant developments of photothermal applications and give a brief outlook on the current challenges and future directions of photothermal nanomaterials.

Photothermal Nanomaterials: A Powerful Light-to-Heat Converter

As an extraordinarily lightweight and porous functional nanomaterial family, aerogels have attracted considerable interest in academia and industry in recent decades. Despite the application scopes, the modest mechanical durability of aerogels makes their processing and operation challenging, in particular, for situations demanding intricate physical structures. “Bottom-up” additive manufacturing technology has the potential to address this drawback. Indeed, since the first report of 3D printed aerogels in 2015, a new interdisciplinary research area combining aerogel and printing technology has emerged to push the boundaries of structure and performance, further broadening their application scope. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art of printed aerogels and presents a comprehensive view of their developments in the past 5 years, and highlights the key near- and mid-term challenges.

3D printing is a promising technique for the sustainable fabrication of energy devices with arbitrary architectures. Extrusion-based 3D printing, called direct ink writing, is increasingly used for the manufacturing of batteries, supercapacitors and catalytic systems. In order to obtain mechanically stable and functional devices, inks formulation must meet stringent criteria for printability, that are usually expressed in terms of rheological properties. Inks are rheologically complex fluids, in which the electroactive materials are mixed with additives and solvents to form an extrudable and self-standing paste. The ink formulation process plays a key role in tuning the rheology and the functional properties of the printed device. In this review, inks formulation, rheological characteristics and device performance are critically discussed, providing insights into the rheology-printability and formulation–functional properties relationships. The main strategies that have been proposed to obtain printable inks from energy materials are reviewed. The role played by the different ink components to achieve the target rheology is contextualized and the integration of different inks into an all-printed device is discussed. Finally, an outlook on the future challenges and opportunities for the DIW of energy materials is provided with the view that general formulations which do necessitate thermal post processing could widen the opportunities of this manufacturing technique enabling the use for large scale production of energy devices.

Two-dimensional material inks

Typical catalyst inks in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are composed of a catalyst, its support, an ionomer and a solvent and are used with solution processing approaches to manufacture conventional catalyst layers (CLs). Because of this, catalyst ink formulation and deposition processes are closely related to CL structure and performance. However, catalyst inks with ideal rheology and optimized electrochemical performances remain lacking in the large-scale application of PEMFCs. To address this, this review will summarize current progress in the formulation, characterization, modeling and deposition of catalyst inks. In addition, this review will highlight recent advancements in catalyst ink materials and discuss corresponding complex interactions. This review will also present various catalyst ink dispersion methods with insights into their stability and introduce the application of small-angle scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) technologies in the characterization of catalyst ink microstructures. Finally, recent studies in the kinetic modeling and deposition of catalyst inks will be analyzed. The formulation and the deposition process of catalyst inks determine the formation of catalyst. The interaction between the components of the catalyst ink governs the microstructure and processability of the ink, thereby affecting the microstructure and performance of the CL.

The Controllable Design of Catalyst Inks to Enhance PEMFC Performance: A Review

Ubiquitous portable electronics and the ever-growing internet-of-things have necessitated the emergence of high-end miniaturized devices as well as associated sophisticated printing technologies. With excellent solution processability and tunable electronic properties, 2 D materials stand as a promising candidate for functional inks that are readily printable for energy-storage devices. In this Review, we outline the significance, status, and challenges that we are facing of the developments of 2 D materials-based functional inks. Then, general ink formulation and basic knowledge of printing techniques together with their rheological requirements and enabled applications in energy storage are introduced, providing guidelines for developing inks that match well with the present printing techniques. Last, but not least, we also propose the perspectives on the development of 2 D materials-based inks for energy-storage applications.
