Renewable energy transitions are essential for decarbonizing the world economy and mitigating global climate change. Yet many energy technologies classified as renewable have human health and livelihood implications that jeopardize the lives and wellbeing of those already most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The purpose of this study is thus to summarize the documented environmental justice (EJ) impacts associated with renewable energy technologies included in many renewable energy policies globally. Our motivation for this study is to ensure that renewable energy policies incorporate concerns for justice into their formulation and implementation. We provide a systematic review of the literature assessing renewable energy technologies from the perspective of distributive, procedural, recognition, and capability interpretations of environmental justice. Our review finds that there are ten common renewable energy technologies that have EJ implications documented in the current literature, and that future energy transition policy development needs to ensure these justice concerns are addressed.

This article offers new insights into how Wangari Maathai's rhetoric of emplacement may be productively understood as a growing form of postcolonial communication, which is amenable to criticism and theory-building in rhetorical studies. Maathai's emplaced rhetoric (ER) addressed postcolonial oppressions while emphasizing peacebuilding. ER is a form of postcolonial symbolic and discursive message-making found in a variety of communication contexts, often political, intercultural, and international exchanges about the environment. OpenStreetMap in Israel and Palestine – ‘Game changer’ or reproducer of contested cartographies?

Today's smartphones not only serve as a means of personal communication device, but are also fundamentally transforming the traditional understanding of crowdsourcing to an emerging type of participatory, task-oriented applications. It aims to support the so-called Citizen Science efforts for knowledge discovery, to understand the human behavior and measure/evaluate their opinions. In this paper, to facilitate the above scenarios, we propose a novel energy-efficient participatory crowdsourcing framework that meets the quality-of-information (QoI) requirements of the request in a distributed manner. Specifically, we extend the traditional framework of Gur Game for distributed decision-making to recommend the level of information contribution for each participant, by merging the multiple automaton chains into a single chain with multiple steady states. We evaluate the proposed scheme under the MIT social evolution data set, where the QoI requirements of the request are successfully achieved, with a satisfactory level of energy consumption fairness among participants, of negligible computational complexity. Finally, we explore the impact of community structure on the proposed algorithm, and propose a feasible method to facilitate the local data aggregation.

This article provides a review of the terms and practices associated with the democratization of cartography, and illustrates their potential to contribute to the environmental justice movement. The Internet has revolutionized how maps are made and communicated. Citizen mapping involves multiple individuals collaborating on the collection and synthesis of spatial data via Web-based software. Google Earth allows users to combine and communicate cartographic information without extensive geospatial training. These developments have freed geography from its stereotype of being a study of place names to a discipline that can engage the public in the collection, analysis, and most important, the comprehension of the power of maps to promote environmental and social justice.
