Continued increasing of fault rate in integrate circuit makes processors more susceptible to errors, especially many-core processor. Meanwhile, most systems or applications do not need full fault coverage, which has excessive overhead. So on-demand fault tolerance is desired for these applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive low-overhead fault tolerance mechanism for many-core system, called Device View Redundancy(DVR). It treats fault tolerance as a device that can be configured and used by application when high reliability is needed. Nevertheless, DVR exploits the idle resources for low overhead fault tolerance, which is based on the observation that the utilization of many-core system is low due to lack of parallelism in application. Finally, the experiment shows that the performance overhead of DVR is reduced by 16% to 98% compared with full Dual Modular Redundancy(DMR).

Device View Redundancy: An Adaptive Low-Overhead Fault Tolerance Mechanism for Many-Core System

The invention relates to a power failure reset method and device based on a VxWorks system. The method comprises the following steps that: when the program of an operating system is exceptional, carrying out power failure on all hardware circuits of a system with a minimum CPU (Central Processing Unit) in the operating system; and if the power failure time of the hardware circuit achieves a presettime period, electrifying all hardware circuits subjected to power failure to enable the CPU reset in the system with the minimum CPU to be consistent with the time sequence of all reset hardware circuits. By use of the method, the reset time sequences of all chips of the system with the minimum CPU can be guaranteed to be consistent with an electrifying reset time sequence, and the normal startup of the VxWorks operating system is realized.

Power failure reset method and device based on VxWorks system

Abstract Testing Non Functional Requirements (NFR) is critical for the success of software project. Among all NFR, software reliability testing is an ongoing challenge for software in general and safety critical systems in particular. Since software reliability, as a quality attribute, cannot be tested as a whole it therefore is decomposed in to sub factors e.g. availability, correctness, fault tolerance etc. each of which can be measured through set of metrics. One fundamental way to associate sub factors against metrics is through a conceptual framework. Existing frameworks in literature for software reliability testing have variation in sub factors and corresponding metrics through statistical evaluation. There is a need to identify and correlate sub factors and their corresponding metrics against software reliability testing. The association should be performed in a schematic way based upon empirical data gathered from target population i.e. reliability testers from global software industry. Since the conceptual framework is proposed to global software industry we therefore identified sub factors and their corresponding metrics from a sample of 81 global software reliability testing experts. All empirical data was evaluated through statistical analysis i.e. correlation and binary logistic regression. The data was also validated by a focus group of 11 experts who had up to 20 years of experience and had numerous certifications in the domain of reliability testing. A conceptual framework for reliability testing in which 33 metrics are correlated with maturity, 10 metrics are correlated with availability, 3 metrics are correlated with fault tolerance, 7 metrics are correlated with recoverability and 5 metrics are correlated with correctness are represented through a schematic relationship in hierarchical structure. A conceptual framework for reliability testing is designed which will not only facilitate in understanding of relationship between the sub factors and their corresponding metrics, it will also help in designing more effective test cases and their measurement through a set of relevant metrics. Statistical evaluation of sub factors and their corresponding metrics with reliability testing was evident through correlation analysis as their p-value &lt; 0.05 and regression analysis since all sub factors and their corresponding metrics had positive coefficient. 

A Conceptual Framework for Software Reliability Testing

Soft errors are increasingly important threats to the reliability of integrated circuits. Chips manufactured in advanced technologies show variations in SER caused by variations in the process parameters. Ongoing reduction of feature sizes and complexity of operating environment (temperature, voltage, radiation pressure and so on), SER variation is increasingly manifesting. Checkpoint is one of the most popular recovery method used for many systems, and the intervals of checkpoint can obviously influence performance. However, optimal intervals of checkpoint rely on SER. Theoretically speaking, SER adaptive checkpoint (SACP) which dynamically match checkpoint intervals with real time SER can improve checkpoint overhead under variable SER. But benefits of SACP are relative with SER variation. We give a mathematical model of SER variation and proposal a way to predict SER based errors occurred most currently. Results show high accuracy of SER prediction and much overhead improvement of SACP.

Soft-Error-Rate Adaptive Intervals for Low-Overhead Checkpoint Mechanism

Recent advance in the space application has increased the requirements for more real-time and reliable on-board computation. Running in a harsh space environment, on-board computers could suffer transient faults, such as single event upset (SEU) frequently. Reloading tasks or rebooting system may recover these faults, but they have seriously effects on deadlines of tasks and increase resource and energy consumption. We proposed a feasible and efficient local checkpoint model (LCM). Based on the reliability of the memory subsystem and the availability of soft-implemented fault detection techniques, a segmented rollback recovery is used in LCM. We also implemented a local checkpoint mechanism (LCMech) on VxWorks. Experiment results show that LCMech has an advantage of the space and time overhead and a strong capability of fault recovery supported by soft-implemented error detection. Therefore, the local checkpoint could satisfy requirements for real-time and reliable on-board computation and improve efficiency of fault tolerance of computer systems in space.
