Although they are not as favorable as other influential gas sensors, metal-oxide semiconductor-based chemiresistors ensure minimal surface reactivity, restricting their gas selectivity, gas response, and reaction kinetics, particularly when functioning at room temperature (RT). A hybrid design, which includes metal-oxide/carbon nanostructures and passivation with specific gas filtration layers, can address the concerns of surface reactivity. We present a novel hierarchical nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO), decorated with graphitic carbon (GC) and synthesized via a wet-chemical strategy, which is then followed by the self-assembly of a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8). Because of its large surface area, high porosity, and efficient inspection of other analyte (interfering) gases, the ZnO@GC can provide intensified surface reactivity at RT. In the present study, such a hybrid sensor confirmed extraordinary gas sensing properties, which was characterized by excellent H2 selectivity, fast response, rapid recovery kinetics, and high gas response (ΔR/R0 ∼ 124.6%@10 ppm), particularly in extremely humid environments. The results reveal that adsorption sites provided by the ZIF-8 template-based ZnO@GC frameworks facilitate the adsorption and desorption of H2.

2D/2D Nanostructured System Based on WO3/WS2 for Acetone Sensor and Breath Analyzer

As a source of clean energy, hydrogen (H2) is a promising alternative to fossil fuels in reducing the carbon footprint. However, due to the highly explosive nature of H2, developing a high-performance sensor for real-time detection of H2 gas at low concentration is essential. Here, we demonstrated the H2 gas sensing performance of Ag/Pd nanoparticle-functionalized ZnO nanoplates. Bimetallic Ag/Pd nanoparticles with an average size of 8 nm were prepared and decorated on the surface of ZnO nanoplates to enhance the H2 gas sensing performance. Compared with pristine ZnO, the sensor based on ZnO nanoplate doped with Ag/Pd (0.025 wt%) exhibited an outstanding response upon exposure to H2 gas (Ra/Rg = 78 for 500 ppm) with fast response time and speedy recovery. The sensor also showed excellent selectivity for the detection of H2 over the interfering gases (i.e., CO, NH3, H2S, and VOCs). The superior gas sensing of the sensor was dominated by the morphological structure of ZnO, and the synergistic effect of strong adsorption and the optimum catalytic characteristics of the bimetallic Ag/Pd enhances the hydrogen response of the sensors. Thus, bimetallic Ag/Pd-doped ZnO is a promising sensing material for the quantitative determination of H2 concentration towards industrial applications.

A sigh-performance hydrogen gas sensor based on Ag/Pd nanoparticle-functionalized ZnO nanoplates

This study introduces an inventive acetone-sensing device seamlessly integrated into a disposable face mask, enabling real-time continuous breath monitoring. The sensor demonstrates exceptional sensitivity, registering a response of 8.22 at 1 ppm and an impressive sensor response of 57.33 at 100 ppm acetone concentration. Particularly noteworthy is the remarkable lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.076 ppm within the concentration range of 0.1-0.8 ppm, underscored by a robust R2 value of 0.994. To validate practicality, the Pd/WO3 sensor was incorporated onto cellulose paper and utilized for real-time breath analysis, yielding a substantial sensor response of 1.70 at 8 vol.% (equivalent to a single breath volume). The unique design incorporates a built-in disposable face mask, facilitating dependable and convenient real-time breath analysis. Additionally, this research explores the profound impact of introducing acetone and Pd atoms on the energy levels and dipole moments. The species elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) investigations encompassing WO3, WO3-acetone, Pd-WO3, and Pd-WO3-acetone species. This work presents an innovative and cost-effective approach for developing a portable, non-invasive, and highly sensitive acetone-sensing device, effectively integrated into a disposable face mask for real-time breath analysis. This pioneering technology holds immense potential for various applications in healthcare and beyond. Significant environmental ramifications result from this research's focus on developing a sensing device coupled with a disposable face mask for real-time continuous exhaling breath monitoring. A cheap and portable way to track acetone levels in breath analysis is to utilize Pd/WO3 material on cellulose paper as a substrate. By providing real-time, non-invasive breath monitoring, this gadget assists in identifying and controlling acetone exposure in a variety of environments. It improves environmental monitoring capabilities with an anticipated limit of detection (LOD) of 0.076 ppm. Overall, this study addresses environmental problems brought on by acetone exposure and encourages the protection of human health. 

Development and integration of a hierarchical Pd/WO3 acetone-sensing device for real-time exhaled breath monitoring with disposable face mask

Review of Noble Metal and Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Based Chemiresitive Hydrogen Sensors

It is generally recognized that the main function of α-tocopherol (αToc), which is the most active form of vitamin E, is its antioxidant effect, while non-antioxidant effects have also been reported. We previously found that αToc ameliorates diabetic nephropathy via diacylglycerol kinase alpha (DGKα) activation in vivo, and the activation was not related to the antioxidant effect. However, the underlying mechanism of how αToc activates DGKα have been enigmatic. We report that the membrane-bound 67 kDa laminin receptor (67LR), which has previously been shown to serve as a receptor for epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), also contains a novel binding site for vitamin E, and its association with Vitamin E mediates DGKα activation by αToc. We employed hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX/MS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to identify the specific binding site of αToc on the 67LR and discovered the conformation of the specific hydrophobic pocket that accommodates αToc. Also, HDX/MS and MD simulations demonstrated the detailed binding of EGCG to a water-exposed hydrophilic site on 67LR, while in contrast αToc binds to a distinct hydrophobic site. We demonstrated that 67LR triggers an important signaling pathway mediating non-antioxidant effects of αToc, such as DGKα activation. This is the first evidence demonstrating a membrane receptor for αToc and one of the underlying mechanisms of a non-antioxidant function for αToc.
