Biochar as potential sustainable precursors for activated carbon production: Multiple applications in environmental protection and energy storage

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) possess energy densities higher than those of the conventional batteries, but their lower power densities and poor cycling lives are critical challenges for their applications to electric vehicles (EVs) or grid stations. The energy and power densities, as well as the life of LIBs are dependent on electrodes where sluggish diffusion control process and structural stability are the main concerns. Here, the lithium storage mechanism of anode materials and the Goodenough diagram to explain the potential of cell and key parameters to determine the performance of an anode are highlighted. The cost reduction parameters and the availability of anode materials for future batteries on the basis of their resources and performances will be discussed. Further, the recent progress on anode nanostructures and solutions to the associated challenges will be outlined. The use of several techniques to determine the dynamic variations in nanostructures including both structural and chemical changes of electrode nanostructures during cycling as well as the limitations for high load applications will be explained. Finally, the concluding remarks will highlight the characteristics for both anode and cathode for better choice of electrode combinations in the full batteries.

Nanostructured Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries: Progress, Challenge and Perspective

Electrochemical energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and batteries, have been proven to be the most effective energy conversion and storage technologies for practical application. However, further development of these energy storage devices is hindered by their poor electrode performance. Carbon materials used in supercapacitors and batteries are often derived from nonrenewable resources under harsh environments. Naturally abundant biomass is a green, alternative carbon source with many desired properties. This review article presents state of the art of renewable carbon materials derived from natural biomasses with an emphasis on their applications in supercapacitors and lithium–sulfur batteries.

A 3D porous Al foil coated with a uniform carbon layer (pAl/C) is prepared and used as the anode and current collector in a dual-ion battery (DIB). The pAl/C-graphite DIB demonstrates superior cycling stability and high rate performance, achieving a highly reversible capacity of 93 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 2 C over the voltage range of 3.0-4.95 V. In addition, the DIB could achieve an energy density of ≈204 Wh kg-1 at a high power density of 3084 W kg-1 .

Carbon‐Coated Porous Aluminum Foil Anode for High‐Rate, Long‐Term Cycling Stability, and High Energy Density Dual‐Ion Batteries

Being simple, inexpensive, scalable and environmentally friendly, microporous biomass biochars have been attracting enthusiastic attention for application in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, porous bamboo biochar is activated via a KOH/annealing process that creates a microporous structure, boosts surface area and enhances electronic conductivity. The treated sample is used to encapsulate sulfur to prepare a microporous bamboo carbon-sulfur (BC-S) nanocomposite for use as the cathode for Li-S batteries for the first time. The BC-S nanocomposite with 50 wt.% sulfur content delivers a high initial capacity of 1,295 mA·h/g at a low discharge rate of 160 mA/g and high capacity retention of 550 mA·h/g after 150 cycles at a high discharge rate of 800 mA/g with excellent coulombic efficiency (⩾95%). This suggests that the BC-S nanocomposite could be a promising cathode material for Li-S batteries.
