The invention discloses self-dimming transparent composite aerogel and a preparation method thereof. The self-dimming transparent composite aerogel is characterized by comprising one aerogel layer, athermochromic layer and another aerogel layer, and the thermochromic layer is a composite aerogel layer with vanadium dioxide nanoparticles inside. The invention further provides a preparation methodof the self-dimming type transparent composite aerogel. The preparation method comprises the following steps of preparation of matrix gel, preparation of thermochromic gel, preparation of composite gel and supercritical drying. The temperature control type transparent composite aerogel has excellent heat insulation and heat preservation effects, is light, transparent, soundproof, resistant to explosion, capable of reducing vibration and absorbing energy and the like, and also has a self-dimming characteristic, that is, the optical performance of the aerogel can be automatically adjusted through ambient temperature change. The energy-saving efficiency is improved; moreover, the preparation process is simple, convenient and practical, and the application value is very high.
