Calcareous Nannoplankton Response to Surface-Water Acidification Around Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a

Low-latitude ?upper Barremian–lower Aptian palynoflora and paleovegetation of the Biyadh Formation (Arabian Plate, eastern margin of northern Gondwana): evidence for a possible cold snap

ABSTRACT The Qinling Orogenic Belt was formed by multi-stage convergence and subsequent collision between the North China Block and South China Block during the Palaeozoic to Late Triassic. Following the collision between the South Qinling Belt and the South China Block in the Late Triassic, the whole Qinling Orogenic Belt evolved into an intracontinental orogeny. However, the exact termination time of the Late Mesozoic intracontinental contractional deformation and the tectonic transformation from compression to extension remains unclear. The extensional shear zone developed in the West Qinling Orogenic Belt provides a crucial clue to revealing the tectonic transformation and uplift and exhumation of the orogenic belt. This study focuses on kinematics, deformation temperature, and geochronology of the shear zone in the West Qinling Orogenic Belt through detailed field structural analysis and laboratory analysis. The Taibai shear zone (TBSZ), located in the West Qinling Orogenic Belt, cuts across the Qinling Orogenic Belt along the NE–NEE direction and separates the Taibai pluton in the east from the Baoji pluton in the west. The NE–NEE-striking TBSZ is an extensional shear zone showing a top-to-the-NW sinistral shear sense. The TBSZ was formed under the high greenschist–low amphibolite facies conditions (300–550°C) in the middle-upper crust level (8–15 km). Zircon U–Pb dating and biotite and muscovite 40Ar/39Ar dating indicate that the TBSZ occurred at 120–113 Ma. The extensional TBSZ and normal faults on its hanging wall indicate the tectonic transformation and the extensional collapse of the Mesozoic intracontinental orogenic belt during the late Early Cretaceous. The Cretaceous extensional collapse of the Qinling Orogenic Belt also led to the rapid uplift and exhumation of the Taibai pluton and the North Qinling Belt in the east.

Structural and geochronological constraints on a Late Mesozoic tectonic transformation in the West Qinling Orogenic Belt, China

An integrated biostratigraphy using orbitolinids, calcareous nannofossils, and dinoflagellate cysts was conducted on the Lower Cretaceous Sarcheshmeh Formation in two stratigraphic sections from the western Koppeh-Dagh Basin (NE Iran). The analyzed successions consist mainly of deep-marine shales and marlstones with intercalations of thin-bedded orbitolinid-bearing limestones. These strata yielded common to abundant and fairly well to well-preserved calcareous nannofossil assemblages. The aforementioned assemblages led to the identification of parts of the NC6 and NC7a biozones that can be correlated with parts of the CC7a and CC7b zones. The organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts also show well-preserved and relatively diverse assemblages in the studied sections that corresponded to the Odontochitina operculata Zone. Additionally, within the limestone intercalations of the Sarcheshmeh Formation, two index species of orbitolinids, Praeorbitolina cormyi Schroeder, and P. wienandsi Schroeder, were recorded, indicating the presence of the Praeorbitolina cormyi Zone. According to the literature, these recognized biozones are compatible with the ammonite zones of Deshayesites forbesi, Deshayesites deshayesi, and Dufrenoyia furcata, as well as the Globigerinelloides blowi and Leupoldina cabri planktonic foraminiferal zones. By the compilation of all acquired data, an age of late early Aptian (late Bedoulian) is deduced for the Sarcheshmeh Formation in the studied sections. 

Integrated biostratigraphy (orbitolinids, calcareous nannofossils, and palynomorphs) of the Lower Cretaceous Sarcheshmeh Formation, western Koppeh-Dagh Basin, NE Iran

The lower Cretaceous rock units of the Koppeh-Dagh Basin of north eastern Iran were investigated here in terms of biostratigraphy, depositional setting and geochemical analyses to find out if they, alike other parts of the world, are rich in petroleum. For this purpose, a stratigraphic framework is established using calcareous nannofossil and palynological elements. A nannoplankton zonation based on which subzones of the zones CC7 – CC8 of Sissingh (1977) and their equivalent NC6 – NC8 of Roth (1978) was established indicating a Late Barremian –Albian age. Palynological assemblages led us to establish the local palynozone of Odontochitina operculata. A dominantly marginal basin to a transitional zone between shelf and basin under a dysoxic – anoxic condition with low to moderate sedimentation rates coincided with a gradual sea level rise was introduced as the environment of deposition for the strata via interpretation of the palynological parameters and quantitative palynology. The obtained data from Rock-Eval pyrolysis in compilation with palynofacies analysis reveals that the studied succession contains mainly gas-prone type III kerogen. The Spore Coloration Index (SCI) alongside with the RockEval pyrolysis results (Low values of HI and TOC) proves that these rock units locally produced natural gas during the time under consideration.
