PurposeThe widespread uptake of digital technology tools for online teaching and learning reached its peak during the nationwide lockdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. It transformed the higher education institutions (HEIs) marketplace both in developed and developing countries. However, in this process of digital transformation, several HEIs, specifically from developing countries, faced major challenges. That threatened to affect their sustainability and performance. In this vein, this study conducts a bibliometric review to map the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggest strategies for HEIs to cope with post-pandemic situations in the future.Design/methodology/approachThis comprehensive review encompasses 343 papers published between 2020 and 2023, employing a systematic approach that combines bibliometrics and content analysis to thoroughly evaluate the articles.FindingsThe investigation revealed a lack of published work addressing the specific challenges faced by the faculty members affecting their well-being. The study underscores the importance of e-learning technology adoption for higher education sustainability by compelling both students and teachers to rely heavily on social media platforms to maintain social presence and facilitate remote learning. The reduced interpersonal interaction during the pandemic has had negative consequences for academic engagement and professional advancement for both educators and students.Practical implicationsThis has implications for policymakers and the management of HEIs, as it may prove useful in reenvisioning and redesigning future curricula. The paper concludes by developing a sustainable learning framework using a blended approach. Additionally, we also provide directions for future research to scholars.Originality/valueThis study has implications for policymakers and HEI management to rethink the delivery of future courses with a focus on education and institute sustainability. Finally, the research also proposes a hybrid learning framework for sustainability and forms a robust foundation for scholars in future research.

The research paper is a qualitative study of the multifaceted role of language as a potent tool of power and its connection to the theme of madness within the novels "Waiting for the Barbarians" by Coetzee and "The Secret History" by Tartt. Within the world of fiction, language emerges as a dynamic force, enabling creators to craft narratives that draw upon intricate emotions and characterizations. Close textual reading and analysis serve as the primary instruments for data collection, and this research contextualizes itself within the broader landscape of literary analysis, postcolonial studies, and discourse analysis, and unveils the dynamic ways in which language becomes a tool for wielding power, from economic and political dominance to coercive control. Ultimately, the paper underscores the impact of language on societal power structures, and its role in constructing and dismantling narratives, offering a compelling lens through which to examine the theme of madness in these literary works.

Unraveling Madness: Linguistic Complexities in ‘Waiting for the Barbarian’ and ‘The Secret History’

Pursuing m aritime e ducation in d igital e ra : students voices . Technology advancement shifts maritime education's focus from theoretical concepts to practical action. Therefore, this study investigated the perspectives of vocational students and the obstacles during undertaking degrees in maritime institution. It engaged 200 students from an Indonesian maritime college, which employed a mixed-method research design using closed and open-ended questionnaires. The results of quantitative data revealed students’ high acceptance in pursuing maritime education, which was affected by five factors: high-qualified education, friends, practical skill, economic motif, and job availability. The qualitative data showed challenges regarding financial problems, time management, adaptation, technological development, and foreign language problems. Some possible solutions considered scholarships, having peers, being selective in joining campus activities, and improving skills and knowledge. Hence, maritime institutions should improve their qualification in the digital era. Students have to be equipped with technology-practical-based skills to become professionals in the maritime sector. Keywords: education, maritime education, pursuing education, digital era. Abstrak: Meraih pendidikan maritim di era digital: persepsi siswa . Peningkatan teknologi mencipatakan perubahan focus pendidikan maritim dari konsep teori ke kegiatan praktek. Karena itulah penelitian ini menyelediki persepsi siswa vokasi dan tantangan yang mereka hadapi ketika menjalani pendidikan di intitusi maritim. Penelitian ini melibatkan 200 siswa dari salah satu institusi maritim di Indonesia dengan menerapkan desain penelitian metode campuran menggunakan kuesioner terbuka dan tertutup. Hasil dari kuantitatif data menunjukkan penerimaan yang tinggi para siswa dalam meraih pendidikan maritim yang dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor: pendidikan yang berkualitas tinggi, teman, kemampuan praktek, motif ekonomi, dan ketersediaan pekerjaan. Kemudian beberapa solusi diberikan seperti beasiswa, mempunyai teman, selektif dalam memilih kegiatan kampus, dan meningkatkan kemampuan dan ketrampilan. Karena itulah institusi pendidikan tinggi maritim seharusnya meningkatkan kualitas mereka di era digital. Para siswa seharusnya diperlengkapi dengan ketrampilan berbasis teknologi terapan untuk menjadikan mereka profesional di sektor maritim. Pursuing Maritime Education in Digital Era: Students’ Voices

This paper seeks to establish whether there is a statistically significant difference in students’ academic performance in mathematics and non-mathematics courses using face-to-face, online, and blended instruction. The study is quantitative research and employs a case study approach covering 603 students at the Catholic University of Ghana. The paired sampled t-test is adopted to analyze the data set. The study found that at a 5 percent significant level, there is no statistically significant difference in students’ academic performance in mathematics and non-mathematics courses using face-to-face instruction. Conversely, a statistically significant difference exists in students’ academic performance in mathematics and non-mathematics courses using online and blended instructions. The study concludes that non-mathematics courses can be best taught using online instruction whereas mathematics-related courses can best be taught using blended instruction. However, face-to-face instruction leads to no difference in students’ academic performance.

Mode of Instructional and Students’ Academic Performance in Mathematics and Non- Mathematics Courses

Technology has emerged as an accelerative tool for online teaching and learning during covid-19 pandemic. This growing rate of covid-19 cases resulted in a swift change in countries to adopt escalated preventive measures for working and studying through online platforms. In this study, the authors aim to investigate the impact of online classes on students' learning performance and to explore what problems prevent effective education in Pakistan. An exploratory research design was employed and data was collected through questionnaire-administered online, the purposive sampling has been used among 60 participants studying in the third year of bachelor studies. The participants were selected seemingly due to their broader knowledge in the discipline as compare to beginners i.e. first year students, who may lack possible computer skills. Moreover, literature review presented in this research studies is relevant to online learning during covid-19. The theoretical framework for this research was based on facilitative learning proposed from Carl Roger's person-centered approach. The findings revealed that sudden shift to new format affected students' performance negatively. This study outcome benefits the online learners and higher education institutes to be prepared and to become more aware of the prospective challenges.

Exploring the Impact of Online Classes on Students’ Performance during Covid-19: Voices from Pakistan

Language development is influenced by a number of factors, one of them is existing knowledge. Previous studies suggest that contextualizing language learning materials can help low-skilled learners improve their performance. This study is grounded in Frederic Bartlett’s schema theory (1932), which posits that individuals use prior knowledge to interact with new information. A sample of 60 students was divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), with 30 students in each. Both groups read an excerpt from The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but the experimental group received instruction that included familiar cultural cues to aid comprehension. The groups were assessed through comprehension questions, which were evaluated based on vocabulary, evaluation, and inferential skills. A post-assessment survey using a Likert scale examined students’ perceptions of the contextualization’s impact on their performance. The results indicated that students performed better when academic content was familiar. The experimental group demonstrated stronger analytical and inferential skills, displaying the benefits of using culturally relevant cues to improve comprehension and engagement. This study supports the previous findings and emphasizes the value of contextualized learning to enhance students’ interest and comprehension.
