The present investigations were conducted during 2014 and 2015 to study the effect of elevated CO2 and temperature on diseases viz. Phytopthora blight and Cercospora leaf spot infestation and severity on bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), respectively. The experiment was carried out under four conditions, i.e. three Open Top Chambers, (T1: OTC with elevated CO2 550±10 ppm; T2: OTC with elevated temperature 1◦C and elevated CO2 550±10 ppm; T3: OTC with ambient temperature and CO2 (reference) and T4: natural air and temperature). The present study reveal that the maximum Phytophthora blight incidence was under elevated CO2 and temperature (22.71%) which differed statistically with elevated CO2 (16.29%), ambient CO2 and temperature (11.09%) and natural condition (9.24%). California Wonder recorded significantly higher Phytophthora blight incidence (17.81%) as compared to Solan Bharpur (11.87%). Amongst all treatments, higher Cercospora leaf spot severity was under elevated CO2 and temperature (7%) which was statistically at par with elevated CO2 (5.82%) and differed statistically from ambient CO2 and temperature (5.22%) and natural condition (3.86%). Cercospora leaf spot severity was significantly higher (6.11%) in California Wonder as compared to Solan Bharpur (4.84%). Both elevated temperature and CO2 had significant effects on diseases infestation and severity of Phytopthora blight and Cercospora leaf spot, respectively. The crop productivity of bell pepper was affected due to the increase incidence and severity of diseases under changing climatic conditions, i.e. elevated CO2 and temperature.

Impact of Climate Variability on Seed Yield of Onion in Mid Hills of Himachal Pradesh, India

Experiment was conducted during 2014 and 2015 to study effect of elevated CO2 and temperature on quality and biochemical parameters of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) crop. To carry out experiment there were four conditions, i.e. in three Open Top Chambers, (T1: OTC with elevated CO2550±10 ppm; T2: OTC with elevated temperature 1◦C and elevated CO2550±10 ppm; T3: OTC with ambient temperature and CO2(reference) and T4: natural air and temperature). Pooled data for two years indicated that higher fruit size (40.19 cm2) and average fruit weight (63.06 g/ fruit) was obtained in plants grown under elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and temperature treatment resulted lower leaf chlorophyll (1 708.71 mg/kg). Higher ascorbic acid content in fruits (159.12 mg/100g) was recorded under elevated CO2 and temperature. Lower total soluble solids were observed under elevated CO2 (4.02°B) while higher under elevated CO2 and temperature (5.39°B). Higher N content (5.73%) was recorded under natural condition and lower under elevated CO2 (4.08%). Higher P (0.39%), K (5.21%) and Mg (0.49%) content was recorded under natural condition and lower values were recorded under elevated CO2 and temperature. Significantly higher Ca content (0.46%) was recorded in elevated CO2 and lowest in natural condition (0.35%). Both elevated temperature and CO2 had significant effects on quality and biochemical parameters in vegetables. These parameters of bell pepper crop were affected negatively by changing climatic conditions, i.e. elevated CO2 and temperature where positive effect of CO2 offset by elevated temperature effect.

Impact of Elevated Co2 and Temperature on Quality and Biochemical Parameters of Bell Pepper (capsicum Annuum) Crop

Land use changes are the land conversions from one type to another that alter the earth surface to satisfy mankind's immediate demand. Land use change detection using satellite imageries has emerged important mean to gather information on regional scale changes. Present study envisaged the spatio-temporal land use land cover changes of Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh using LANDSAT imageries of 1989 and 2016. The results were verified through the secondary data as well as primary data collected by detailed survey of the Kullu valley (Kullu and Naggar blocks) and drivers for such changes were also identified. The studies were carried out for major land use type, viz. agriculture, orchard, forest and built up in the valley over a period of 27 years. Supervised classification was done using Maximum Likelihood Classification Algorithm through ERDAS Imagine 14 software. The results indicated that during last 27 years, the built up area has increased to the extent of 90.81% followed by orchards (12.39%) and forest (6.26%), whereas area under agriculture was decreased by 56.88%. The primary data revealed that farmers are abandoning the wheat, paddy, maize and barley crops and are pursuing cultivation of vegetable and fruit crops. Increased economic returns and climate change emerged as the probable drivers for the changes in the valley.

Land Use and Land Cover Changes in Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh

Global climate change, i.e. increase in carbon dioxide concentration in atmosphere and the associated increase in temperature result significant positive and negative impacts on the vegetable crop production. The field experiment was conducted during 2014 and 2015 which aimed to study effect of elevated CO2 and temperature on quality and biochemical parameters of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and experiment was carried out under four combinations of CO2 and temperature. Pooled data for two years indicated that pod length, pod girth, leaf chlorophyll content of pea showed significant differences between all four combinations. Higher total phenols (0.55 g/100g), ascorbic acid content in pods (46.24 mg/100g) were found under elevated CO2 and least under natural condition (total phenols: 0.37 g/100g) (ascorbic acid: 28.44 mg/100g). Total soluble solids (20.81°B) and nitrogen content (2.34%) were higher under natural condition and lowest under elevated CO2 (TSS: 12.47 Â°B) (N: 1.97%). Higher P (0.29%), K (1.11%) and Mg (1.28%) content was recorded under natural condition as compared to other treatments. Elevated CO2 recorded significantly higher Ca content (0.56 %) and least under natural condition (0.46 %). Both elevated CO2 and temperature had significant negative effects on quality and biochemical parameters in pea crop as compared to elevated CO2 and natural conditions. So changing climate can alter the composition of these important elements in pea crop and degrade the overall quality.

Impact of Elevated Co2 and Temperature on Quality and Biochemical Parameters of Pea (pisum Sativum)

During the recent past, weather patterns all over the world have changed and Himachal Pradesh of North-Western Himalaya is no exception. The trend analysis of temperature and precipitation data was done by taking data of 1973-1990 from wet temperate and 1971-90 duration from sub temperate region as baseline which was further divided into two periods i) 1991-2000; ii) 2001-2011 and variation was analysed season wise. In the sub temperate region maximum temperature has increased in all the seasons, however highest increase of 3.11oC was noticed in winter season during 2001-2011 period from the base years of 1971-90. The average minimum temperature was found to decrease over the base period of 197190. The maximum decrease of 1.3oC over the base period was noticed in autumn season during the period of 2001-2011. In the region the period 2001-2011 experienced decrease in the rainfall during summer, spring and winter seasons, however, the maximum decrease of 115.23 mm was noticed in summer season. In wet temperate to dry temperate regions both maximum and minimum temperatures have increased and winters have become warmer. Among all fruits, apple is the main crop of the state occupying the place of pride in its economy. However, the rise in temperatures and decreased snowfall over years has adversely affected apple cultivation in the state. Earlier snowfall was a regular phenomenon in apple growing areas but since 1973-1985 (baseline) a reduction in the snow fall from 430 cm to 51.33 cm during the period of 2006-2010 was recorded. The un-conducive weather during fruit setting and development in apple has reduced the apple productivity of the region. Surprisingly, the orchards below 1500 m elevation have been rendered unproductive. In the sub- tropical climate of foothills of Himalayas the mango is an important crop and is being influenced by frequent frost events. The cold waves during winter months also found to influence the vegetable crops of the region. To adapt to changing climate farmers have shifted to cultivation of pomegranate, kiwi and off-season vegetables. In sub-tropical zone, the regular frost injury to mango plants has become common. The farmers of this zone have shifted to protected cultivation of flowers and vegetables to save their livelihoods. Therefore, accepting change and getting in tune with nature by following scientific mitigation and adaptation strategies seem to be the key to survival and prosperity of mountain farmers.
