A cross sectional survey was conducted among textile workers of six textile factories of different industrial areas of Karachi to determine the frequency of hearing loss. A total of 264 workers were assessed for frequency of hearing loss with audiometric and otoscopic examination conducted by audiologist. About 79% workers had hearing impairment on audiometric assessment having hearing loss ≥25 dB. Of these, 19% of the workers had conductive deafness while 71% had mixed hearing loss. Otoscopic examination revealed that 38% had wax, 41.8 % had ear discharge and 1.6 % had perforation. The multiple logistic regression model shows sound level more than 25 dB aOR: 1.15; 95%CI: 1.10, 1.30 and ear discharge aOR: 2.23; 95%CI: 1.27, 3.92, was found as a strong risk factor of hearing loss (p<0.05). Hearing impairment affects a large proportion of the workers in Pakistan. There is a need for screening of workers exposed to occupational noise. Efforts should be made by the health care system to prevent the problem from an early stage and require effective management of ear-related diseases.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss among an Occupational Group of Textile Workers in Karachi, Pakistan.

Industrial noise pollution has been assessed in 27 industries in south-eastern Nigeria. A total of 750 workers were contacted with working schedules of 6–12h/day, over 5 working days and with exposure times that varied between 0 second and 37.5 minutes were contacted. Noise exposure ratings of greater than unity were found in over 20 of the industries. Although almost all the workers contacted wanted occupational noise pollution controlled because of its various effects on them, a few still responded that they liked occupational noise. This gives credence to the assertion that ignorance of the irreversible nature of the far-reaching and wide-ranging effects of environmental noise pollution could yet be one reason for the "willing" exposure of the industrial plant workers to occupational noise.

Industrial Noise in Nigeria: Measurements, Analysis, Dose and Effects:

Noise is now playing an ever increasing role in our lives now. The trend to build more factories, to use more ground vehicles, and to increase aircrafts etc. has created an acceptance of noise. Thus, noise pollution becomes another category of environmental pollution, which threats human health and well-being. Every year, millions of people are exposed to hazardous noise. Many of them suffer impairment of hearing, and become victims of increasing accidents due to noise effects. Therefore, to conduct noise assessment for any new development and to reduce exposure to high noise levels have become a routine request. Based on increasing energy demand, a new thermal power station will be built in Kuwait. The noise pollution problem from this project has caused great attention in the local communities. We initiated a study to address the local concerns. This paper details the study, which includes monitoring program design, instruments, and assessment results. A simple empirical model was derived for noise level predications.

Occupational noise, particularly in noisy industrial plants is a potentially serious health problem. Therefore, to ensure the health and safety of the workers against high level occupational noise, occupational noise exposure limits of (i) 90 dB(A) L Aeq , with an exchange rate of 3 dB(A), per halving or doubling exposure time, (ii) 90 dB(A) L Aeq , with an exchange rate of 5 dB(A), (iii) 85 dB(A) L Aeq , with exchange rate of 3 dB(A) or (iv) 85 dB(A) L Aeq , with exchange rate of 5 dB(A) have been set up for industrial plants with a working schedule of 8 h/day and 5 days a week (i.e., 40 h/week), by various countries [1]. The International Institute of Noise Control Engineering, USA [1], has recommended a limit of 85 dB(A) L Aeq , with an exchange rate of 3 dB(A) per doubling or halving exposure time, normalized to 8 hours per day and 40 hours a week. The permissible exposure time per day, for the limits of 85 and 90 dB(A) L Aeq , both with exchange rate of 3 and 5 dB(A), analyzed for each dB(A) values is given in Table 1 (on following page). The approximate values of exposure time for intermediate dB(A) values for the limits of 85 and 90 dB(A) L Aeq , with exchange rate of 3 dB(A) are obtained by multiplying the exposure time of 8, 4, 2, — , — , — h/day with 0.75 and d0.625 [2].
