Azithromycin maintenance treatment in patients with frequent exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COLUMBUS): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Sevim Uzun,Remco S. Djamin,Jan Kluytmans,Paul G.H. Mulder,Nils E. van ‘t Veer,Anton A.M. Ermens,Aline J. Pelle,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Menno M. van der Eerden +9 more
TL;DR: Maintenance treatment with azithromycin significantly decreased the exacerbation rate compared with placebo and should therefore be considered for use in patients with COPD who have the frequent exacerbator phenotype and are refractory to standard care.

Occurrence of virus-induced COPD exacerbations during four seasons
Remco S. Djamin,Sevim Uzun,Eveline Snelders,Jan J. W. Kluytmans,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Menno M. van der Eerden +6 more
TL;DR: It was showed that virus-induced COPD exacerbations occur in all four seasons with a peak in the winter months, however, the distribution of rhinovirus infections showed a different pattern, with most infections occurring in July.

Influence of macrolide maintenance therapy and bacterial colonisation on exacerbation frequency and progression of COPD (COLUMBUS): Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
Sevim Uzun,Remco S. Djamin,JanAJW Kluytmans,Nils E. van 't Veer,Anton A.M. Ermens,Aline J. Pelle,Paul G.H. Mulder,Menno M. van der Eerden,JoachimGJV Aerts +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated whether maintenance treatment with macrolide antibiotics in COPD patients with three or more exacerbations in the previous year decreases the exacerbation rate in the year of treatment and to establish microbial resistance due to the long-term treatment.
Long-Term Azithromycin Maintenance Treatment in Patients with Frequent Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
Sander Talman,Sevim Uzun,Remco S. Djamin,Sara J. Baart,Marco J.J.H. Grootenboers,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Menno M. van der Eerden +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that macrolides are effective in reducing the number of exacerbations in COPD patients with the frequent exacerbator phenotype and did not show a persistent effect of azithromycin on exacerbation frequencies after more than one year of usage.
Macrolides to prevent COPD exacerbations
Sevim Uzun,Remco S. Djamin,Nils E. van ‘t Veer,Jan Kluytmans,Anton A.M. Ermens,Henk C. Hoogsteden,Joachim G.J.V. Aerts,Menno M. van der Eerden +7 more
TL;DR: Long-term treatment with macrolide antibiotics is a recent development that has been reported to have beneficial effects on exacerbation frequency and also seems to improve quality of life and is well tolerated.
