The unique profile of cord blood natural killer cells balances incomplete maturation and effective killing function upon activation.
Martha Luevano,Mehri Daryouzeh,Rehab Alnabhan,Sergio Querol,Sergio Querol,Salim I. Khakoo,Alejandro Madrigal,Aurore Saudemont +7 more
TL;DR: The phenotype and functions of CB NK cell subsets are analyzed and the potential of CB as a source of NK cells for immunotherapy is highlighted.

Cord blood transplants: early recovery of neutrophils from co-transplanted sibling haploidentical progenitor cells and lack of engraftment of cultured cord blood cells, as ascertained by analysis of DNA polymorphisms.
M N Fernández,Carmen Regidor,Rafael Cabrera,José A. García-Marco,M Briz,Rafael Fores,Sanjuán I,A.J. McWhinnie,Sergio Querol,J. Garcia,Alejandro Madrigal +10 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that simultaneous infusion of lymphocyte-depleted HLA highly mismatched haematopoietic progenitor cells has not produced unfavourable effects for CBT, and the double transplant model is suitable for evaluating the engraftment potential of ex vivocultured CB cells in the clinical setting.

Washing of cord blood grafts after thawing: high cell recovery using an automated and closed system.
TL;DR: This study evaluated an automated CB washing protocol of thawed cord blood units using the Sepax device to develop techniques aimed at reducing cell losses and increasing reproducibility.

Unexpected High Incidence of Human Herpesvirus-6 Encephalitis after Naive T Cell-Depleted Graft of Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplantation in Pediatric Patients.
Luisa Sisinni,Mercedes Gasior,Raquel de Paz,Sergio Querol,David Bueno,Lucía Fernández,Julia Marsal,Ana Sastre,Ramon Gimeno,Laura C. Alonso,Isabel Badell,Eduardo López-Granados,Juan Torres,Laura Medina,Montserrat Torrent,Cristina Díaz de Heredia,Adela Escudero,Antonio Pérez-Martínez +17 more
TL;DR: Although this treatment achieved a good control of viral reactivations, an unexpectedly high rate of limbic encephalitis due to human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6; 8 cases) was observed, characteristically, the infection appeared early in almost all patients, just after the engraftment.

Plerixafor in patients with lymphoma and multiple myeloma: effectiveness in cases with very low circulating CD34+ cell levels and preemptive intervention vs remobilization
I Sánchez-Ortega,Sergio Querol,Maite Encuentra,S Ortega,A Serra,J M Sanchez-Villegas,Juan-Ramon Grifols,M M Pujol-Balaguer,M Pujol-Bosch,Josep Martí,Tomas Garcia-Cerecedo,Pere Barba,Juan-Manuel Sancho,Albert Esquirol,Jordi Sierra,R F Duarte +15 more
TL;DR: This retrospective study presents data from 105 consecutive multiple myeloma and lymphoma patients who had PB CD34+ cell counts <10/μL on day 4 of steady-state G-CSF mobilization for autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation, and shows that preemptive plerixafor is significantly more effective and more efficient than in remobilization.
