The charismatic Syngnathidae occur in coastal and freshwater environments across the globe and play an important role by acting as flagship species for conservation. Despite this status, many syngnathids are threatened by a range of anthropogenic impacts including exploitation and habitat destruction. In addition, the cryptic nature and generally low population densities of syngnathids make research and related conservation action difficult, which can lead to data gaps. The gap in knowledge of the biology and status of syngnathids is especially acute within Africa. This review provides the first synthesis of syngnathid diversity, biogeography, ecology, threats and conservation in sub-Saharan Africa and adjacent islands. Research focus and effort are biased towards the southeast coast of Africa, with limited research specifically on syngnathids. A total of 63 species of syngnathids in 26 genera are recorded in Africa, with higher syngnathid diversity on the east coast of Africa. Ecological research focused on population trends and diversity is identified as priorities, specifically for those species listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. Other priorities identified include research on the extent and impact of illegal catch and trade and the development of local capacity and expertise. These findings provide an important resource that can be used for the future conservation of this iconic group of fishes.

First Record of Bellybarred Pipefish, Hippichthys spicifer (Syngnathiformes: Syngnathidae) from the west coast of India

The occurrence of the pink pipefish, Bryx analicarens (Duncker, 1915), is reported for the first time from Indian waters. The geographical distribution of the species extends from east Africa, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to Pakistan and now to the west coast of India. Although a total of 32 pipefish species have hitherto been reported from India, the presently reported finding of B. analicarens constitutes the first record of the genus from the country. Morphometric characters, like the absence of the anal fin, the number of trunk rings (15) and tails rings (34), and dorsal fin rays (25) distinguish the species from other species in the region. Bryx analicarens differs from its congeners by having alternately arranged irregular brownish and white bands along the snout. The presently reported study also emphasizes the need for a detailed study of syngnathid biodiversity and a stock assessment of the coral reef ecosystems of the Gulf of Kachchh Marine National Park and Sanctuary for developing conservation strategies.

Study on identifying the suitability of different growing media for seedling establishment and elite seedling production in Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) cv. Chandragiri was conducted with an objective to evaluate the suitability of different growing media for raising the seedlings and to find out most suitable media for better rooting and growth of coffee seedlings. Coffee seedlings were grown in different media for a period of 6 months in nursery. It was revealed from the study that, the growth and vigour of coffee seedling was greatly influenced by different growing media used. Coffee seedlings grown in growing media containing Soil + Sand + Vermicompost (6:2:1) recorded maximum germination (64%), seedling vigour (2125), seedling height (51.7 cm), number of leaves (8.3), leaf area index (71.17 cm2), diameter of stem (2.18 cm), seedling fresh weight (16.79 g) and higher seedling dry weight (3.09 g) when compared with control and other treatments.
