Durable Polylactic Acid (PLA)-Based Sustainable Engineered Blends and Biocomposites: Recent Developments, Challenges, and Opportunities

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polyester that has received widespread attention for its environmentally friendly origin and excellent performance, and its potential to address the current problems of severe white pollution and scarcity of petroleum resources. This article focuses on the synthesis, modification, degradation and application of PLA. The main focus is on the modification of PLA with different environmentally friendly materials (natural organic materials, biodegradable polymers, inorganic minerals) in blends for defects such as the brittleness of PLA. In addition, the applications of PLA composites in the fields of construction, medical, packaging and oil and water separation are also introduced, which hopefully will provide some help to the promotion of PLA.

3D printing by fused deposition modelling (FDM) enables rapid prototyping and fabrication of parts with complex geometries. Unfortunately, most materials suitable for FDM 3D printing are non-degradable, petroleum-based polymers. The current ecological crisis caused by plastic waste has produced great interest in biodegradable materials for many applications, including 3D printing. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), in particular, has been extensively investigated for FDM applications. However, most biodegradable polymers, including PLA, have insufficient mechanical properties for many applications. One approach to overcoming this challenge is to introduce additives that enhance the mechanical properties of PLA while maintaining FDM 3D printability. This review focuses on PLA-based nanocomposites with cellulose, metal-based nanoparticles, continuous fibers, carbon-based nanoparticles, or other additives. These additives impact both the physical properties and printability of the resulting nanocomposites. We also detail the optimal conditions for using these materials in FDM 3D printing. These approaches demonstrate the promise of developing nanocomposites that are both biodegradable and mechanically robust.

Smart packaging relies on the one-to-one interaction of food with its packaging or its environment to monitor food quality and safety. Colorimetric pH indicators (synthetic, natural) working in a smart food packaging system are particularly striking when used with fresh foodstuffs such as fish and meat that perish quickly and require real-time freshness monitoring. In this study, curcumin (Cur) was used as a natural pH indicator to produce sustainable smart packaging material. Towards this objective, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) blend-based films containing Cur were prepared using a twin screw extrusion and hot-pressing processes. Besides, two different compositions of LDPE/TPS mixture (50/50 and 70/30) were used as the matrix. Thermal, mechanical, morphological properties, an affinity for water, and color change properties of LDPE/TPS/Cur films were investigated. They showed a significant color change from yellow to brown at pH: 10 at the end of the seventh day, especially in the 50 LDPE/50 TPS mixture. 50 LDPE/50 TPS mixture with 7% curcumin content gave the highest tensile strength of 8.03 Mpa. When the same mixture was used to monitor chicken meat spoilage at 25°C, meat samples have shown color changes from light yellow to light brown due to the increased content of total volatile basic amines. As a result, it has been suggested that 50 LDPE/50 TPS mixture containing 7% Cur can be used as a smart packaging material.

The aim of this study is the investigation of the effects of an intumescent system, consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), as a flame retardant additive, pentaerythritol (PER), as a carbonic agent, and nanoclay, as a synergistic agent, on the flame retardancy of plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA). In accordance with this purpose, plasticized and flame retarded PLA with APP compound was prepared and used as a control sample. Nanoclay loading levels were changed between 3 and 10 wt.% in the PLA/APP/PER samples. Samples were produced using extrusion and injection molding techniques. The morphological, thermal, mechanical and flammability properties were studied. The flammability evaluation was performed using limiting oxygen index and vertical burning (UL-94) tests. The obtained limiting oxygen index value was up to 32.9 and UL-94 grade could pass V-0 for samples, containing 3 wt.% of nanoclay. However, increasing nanoclay amount has enhanced the burning time of the sample. The thermal behaviors of the samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown, that PER incorporation did not significantly change the percentage crystallinity value. The increasing nanoclay loading levels reduced the degree of crystallization. Elongation at break value of sample, containing 5 wt.% of nanoclay, increased by 28%, compared to the control sample.
