In this paper we introduce IOmi: a life-sized female humanoid hostess robot intended for serving as guidance in indoor public spaces. Its design methodology, adapted from industrial design approaches, is intended to be applicable in different scenarios, considering the final users of the robot, the intended use of the agent, and the contextual environment. Results from the first test inside a Latin American university environment clarified the needs of the potential users and suggested new directions of research.

This paper explores advancements in improving the well-being of aging people at home by integrating data-driven environmental dialogues. Building upon a preliminary study focused on human-coach conversations, our research investigates the implementation of these advancements in the e-VITA virtual coaching system. Core enhancements include utilizing smart environmental sensing as dialogue triggers and crafting dialogue scenarios tailored to the user's context. The focus on heat stroke prevention, utilizing the Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, highlights the system's proactive approach to dynamically changing environmental conditions. Through this methodology, we aim to address the specific needs of the aging population by fostering a more personalized and adaptive interaction, emphasizing solutions for independence and safety.

Implementing Data-Driven Environmental Dialogues to Enhance Well-Being of Aging People at Home With the e- VITA Virtual Coaching System

Healthy ageing is a challenge in societies that can be coped with the help of socially assistive robots. This study introduces CelesTE, a theomorphic device designed to support the well-being of older adults. Building upon the foundations laid by SanTO, the Catholic robot, CelesTE takes the form of an angel in prayer and aims to engage users, particularly those of the Christian Catholic faith. The paper delves into CelesTE’s conceptual evolution, addressing challenges related to religious perceptions, fallibility, and user interaction. Quantitative and qualitative feedback was collected from 14 participants across three European countries. Results indicate generally positive acceptance, although limitation were found. Negative responses are considered particularly valuable for CelesTE’s future development.

The paper aims to examine children's preference of visual appearance and parents' attitudes towards assistive robots. Results show that children do prefer visual appearances of robots with round and smooth edges, compact and stocky body and with feminine characteristics. Gender differences have been found in robot sketch preference, as well as in ascribing gender to robots — boys tend to be more gender-typed. The dominant colour preffered for the robot is blue, which is a colour associated with positive emotional states, trust, and stability. Based on the results, the paper provides general suggestions and guidelines for creating a robot that the children would find likable. Parents have shown more positive than negative attitudes towards robots in general, as well as towards robots in the children's therapy. Gender differences have been found in potentially negative aspects of child-robot interaction, with mothers more concerned about negative consequences. Also, differences in educational levels have been found, with parents of higher educational level showing more positive attitudes towards robots.

Design Choices in the Development of a Robotic Head: Human-Likeness, Form and Colours

With the problem of ageing population increasingly prominent, the burden of families, caregivers and medical workers to take care of older adults will be heavier. Social exclusion and cognitive dysfunctions make things worse, especially in times of a pandemic. One of the most effective approaches to solve these problems can be technology, which application is often limited by the acceptance of the end user. We introduce a social robot, DarumaTO-3, whose appearance is inspired by a traditional Buddhist and Shinto doll called Daruma, and perform a preliminary test in which we hear the response from older adults. This paper describes this new robot prototype, and reports the feedback received from the early deployment with 44 Japanese older adults.
