Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America's Favorite Food

The use of renewable energy sources like photovoltaic systems and biomass plantations require land to intercept incoming solar radiation. This implies that the total amount of energy that can be obtained from these sources is limited. Next to this land is also in use for other purposes, of which food production is the most important. The area required for both food and energy supply depends on one hand on the consumption and on the other on the production per m2. Large differences in both production and consumption are observed globally. In this analysis distinction is made in land use requirements in so-called 'poor' and 'rich' circumstances. It is shown that in poor circumstances there is not enough land to fulfill the needs for food and energy when biomass is used as and energy source. In the rich situation prospects seems to be better, but in that case a large-scale transformation is required of woodlands and forests into intensive energy crop plantations. When PV-systems are used, the land area required for energy is reduced to a large extent. Their large-scale implementation is not possible on the short term due to technical problems. It is concluded that in the near future energy from biomass is the most likely renewable energy source, however, this source cannot fulfill all the energy requirements. For the more distant future energy from PV-systems seems to have the largest potentials, however, implementation requires large changes in present energy infrastructure.

Revewable Energy and foodsupply: will there be enough land?

Vegetables are very slow growing during the initial growth period. In vegetables, weeds caused 70 to 80 per cent yield reduction and hence it is very inevitable to control weeds during the critical weed free period. Integrated weed management (IWM) is a system approach to maintain the weed population below the economic threshold level. Adoption of cultural practices minimized the crop-weed competition. Mechanical methods and herbicidal management of weeds are also recommended in vegetables. Biological control is exploited to a limited extend. Dependence on any single method of weed control may lead to various problems such as shift in weed flora, development of herbicide resistance, emergence of perennial weeds etc. and these problems can be overcome by adopting IWM, since it integrates the use of different methods in a balanced way by managing the weeds effectively to a level that do not pose any significant reduction in yield and harmful effect on environment.

With the rising population, the demand for food, fuel, fiber, and timber is increasing and to meet out these ever-increasing demands farming systems all around the globe has become more intensive to be in pace with these demands. Soils around the world are being subjected to more chemical inputs in form of chemical fertilizers and amendments which are reducing their productivity and plants are being treated for diseases and insect-pests through a variety of chemicals which are entering into the food chain and contaminating water resources. Forests are being leveled to bring more area into agriculture, grazing area is shrinking and habitats of various species are destroying which is causing loss of biodiversity. Moreover, climate change is causing threatening impacts on current agriculture practices which include decreasing yields, the occurrence of new diseases and natural disasters. Considering the present scenario, it has now become utmost necessary to shift from industrialized agriculture to organic farming where sustainability must be the prime objective; where soils are allowed to rejuvenate to their natural potential. However, millions of people around the world still suffering hunger especially when industrialized agriculture is considered as most productive; at this situation, a major shift from conventional to organic farming has raised the question “can organic farming alone achieve sustainability”? Considering the above facts present review inculcated various published research of national and international repute that claims the capability of organic farming to achieve sustainability and the loopholes where it lacks adaptability over conventional farming.

Can chemical-free farming alone achieve sustainability? - A review

Total weed population was significantly reduced under the application of various treatments of weed control at the stages of 20, 40, 60 days and harvest. At stage of 20 DAS, the lowest total weed population were noted in treatment T5 (grass mulch 5t/ha one week after germination). Maximum total weed population was recorded under T9 (Weedy check) treatment which was at par with T6 (One hoeing at 30 DAS), T7 (One H.W. at 30 DAS) and T8 (2 H.W. at 30 and 60 DAS) treatment. At stage of 40 DAS, minimum total weed population was recorded under T4 which was at par with withT3 (Oxyfluorfen @ 0.125 Kg/ha as PE + 1 H.W. at 30 DAS) and T8 (2 H.W. at 30 & 60 DAS) treatment.At stage of 60 DAS and harvest stage, all the weed control treatments significantly reduced total weed population over weedy check. Minimum total weed population was recorded under T8 (2 H.W. at 30 &60 DAS). At 30 days after sowing dry weight of different weeds was reduced significantly by 2 HW at 15 and 30 DAS, which was at par with T5. At 60 days after sowing stage (DAS), the minimum dry matter (2.58 g/m2) was also recorded under treatment 2 HW at 30 & 60 DAS, which resulted in significantly lower dry weight of weeds over rest of the all weed control treatments. In spite of controlling weeds effectively having highest weed control efficiency was recorded in treatment 2 HW at 15 and 30 (97.67%) DAS. Weedy check resulted in maximum weed index (38.50%), followed by pre-emergence application of oxyfluorfen @ 0.250 kg/ha (35.21%), while two hand weeding recorded no weed index (0.00%), followed by grass mulch 5t/ha one week after germination.

Effect of integrated weed management in okra

It was observed that the plant population was almost under all the different weed control practices at both the stages. The maximum plant height at harvest stage was also recorded in T8 (2 H.W. at 30 and 60 DAS), Maximum number of branches at harvest stage were noted under T8 (7.92/plant), which was at par with T5 (7.47/plant) treatment. At harvest, the maximum number of leaves per plant was recorded under the treatment weed free (8.20/plant) which was statistically at par with T5 (grass mulch 5 t/ha one week after germination). The maximum dry weight per plant was recorded under the treatment weed free (22.02/plant) which was statistically superior over all the weed control treatments. Among all the weed management treatments, weed free T8 (2 H.W. at 30 and 60 DAS) recorded significantly higher number of pod per plant. The maximum length of pod (12.20 cm) was recorded in T8 treatment, which was statistically at par with T¬5 and T4 and former treatment recorded significantly longer pod than rest of the treatments. The maximum girth of pod (1.37 cm), yield (1102kg/ha) and maximum harvest index (15.39%) was observed under T8 (2 HW at 30 & 60 DAS).
