Historically, management theory has ignored the constraints imposed by the biophysical (natural) environment. Building upon resource-based theory, this article attempts to fill this void by proposing a natural-resource-based view of the firm—a theory of competitive advantage based upon the firm's relationship to the natural environment. It is composed of three interconnected strategies: pollution prevention, product stewardship, and sustainable development. Propositions are advanced for each of these strategies regarding key resource requirements and their contributions to sustained competitive advantage.

A natural resource-based view of the firm

Improving supply chain sustainability is an essential part of achieving the UN’s sustainable goals. Digitalization, such as blockchain technology, shows the potential to reshape supply chain management. Using distributed ledger technology, the blockchain platform provides a digital system and database to record the transactions along the supply chain. This decentralized database of transactions brings transparency, reliability, traceability, and efficiency to the supply chain management. This paper focuses on such novel blockchain-based supply chain management and its sustainability performances in the areas of environmental protection, social equity, and governance efficiency. Using a systematic literature review and two case studies, we evaluate whether the three sustainability indicators can be improved indirectly along supply chains based on blockchain technology. Our study shows that blockchain technology has the potential to improve supply chain sustainability performance, and we expect blockchain technology to rise in popularity in supply chain management.

Embracement of industry 4.0 and sustainable supply chain practices under the shadow of practice-based view theory: Ensuring environmental sustainability in corporate sector

Sustainability is no longer being questioned as a passing trend, but has been recognized as innovation’s new frontier. However, the complexity of environmental issues requires that firms collaborate with a wide range of external parties as they can supply environmental knowledge and competencies outside a firm’s main domain.This study proposes and tests a model suggesting that inter-organizational collaborations positively affect environmental performance, analyzing the behaviours of the largest publicly traded U.S. companies. The dependent variables are different types of companies’ environmental performance, as reported in the U.S. 500 Newsweek’s 2010 Green Ranking. Data for the independent variables (collaborations undertaken with several types of actor and concerning environmental issues) have been collected through the content analysis of companies’ environmental/sustainability reports and/or their website section devoted to environmental sustainability. Collected data have been analyzed through regression analysis.Results show that inter-organizational collaborations with actors both within (suppliers and customers) and outside the supply chain (government agencies and NGOs) are beneficial for a company’s overall environmental performance, the management of its environmental footprint, and a company’s environmental reputation.

Do Inter-Organizational Collaborations Enhance a Firm’s Environmental Performance? A Study of the Largest U.S. Companies

Sustainable business practices are those that allow companies to increase their profit while still considering the triple bottom line of sustainability, which involves economic, environmental, and social aspects. There are a lot of studies exploring various aspects of supply chain practices. However, there remains a gap for the proposal of a complete framework concerning various industries. This research fills this gap by studying existing empirical and review studies. Based on a content analysis of 86 studies, 789 practices are derived and categorized, leading to a comprehensive classification of sustainable practices in supply chains. Moreover, the employed methods to analyze the data are investigated. The practices are cross-checked versus the studied industries showing the current sustainable industries. The details of the studied papers are presented in a comprehensive table. The sustainable framework showing the industrial solutions toward sustainable supply chains is divided into 38 minor practices classified into 11 main categories. This paper provides a novel interpretation of the sustainable solutions addressed by different industries and presents a new and updated classification of the literature identifying future directions. This offers many advantages for practitioners and researchers to transform a supply chain into an improved version in the bigger picture.
