Liver function tests and glucose and lipid metabolism in growth-restricted fetuses.
TL;DR: Growth-restricted fetuses with absent end-diastolic velocities in the umbilical artery had more marked acidemia, hypoxemia, hypoglycemia, and abnormal liver function than those with end- diastolic Velocities, suggesting high triglyceride levels might reset fetal homeostatic mechanisms, leading to disturbances of lipid metabolism in later life.

Alteration of SREBP activation in liver of trisomy 21 fetuses.
Luisa Diomede,Mario Salmona,Diego Albani,M. Bianchi,Alessandra Bruno,Sarah Salmona,Umberto Nicolini +6 more
TL;DR: It is reported here for the first time that SREBP-1 and SRE BP-2 are present in human fetal liver and their activation follows a different regulatory pattern.

Prenatal diagnosis of genetic syndromes may be facilitated by serendipitous findings at fetal blood sampling
TL;DR: Two women without a specific risk had fetuses with multiple malformations diagnosed by ultrasound; extensive biochemical investigations on fetal blood revealed clues which would have allowed the correct diagnosis of a genetic condition.

Regional production of nitric oxide after a peripheral or central low dose of LPS in mice.
Mirella Zinetti,Fabio Benigni,Silvano Sacco,Manuela Minto,Grazia Galli,Sarah Salmona,Giuseppe Andreoni,Annamaria Vezzani,Pietro Ghezzi,Maddalena Fratelli +9 more
TL;DR: A cross-talk between periphery and brain in the regulation of NO by LPS is demonstrated and the possibility of iNOS-independent NO synthesis stimulated by L PS is implied by the discrepancy between the amount of local NO production suggested by ADP ribosylation and the iNos mRNA levels.

Twin Fetuses and Twin Myths
Luisa Bocconoi,Chiara Boschetto,Elena Caravelli,Alessandra Kustermann,Umberto Nicolini,Sarah Salmona,Beatrice Tassis,Laura Villa,Cinzia Zoppini +8 more
- 01 Jan 2010
TL;DR: The twin birth has been perceived as an extraordinary, often disquieting phenomenon and many legends and myths flourished around their origins as discussed by the authors, and twins were thought to be the result of adultery, considered as the incarnation of evil spirits and ancestors, or, as in the myth of Castor and Pollux, one was regarded as having godly origins and the other not.
