Microencapsulation of phase change materials (PCMs) can address issues such as leakage, corrosion, and volume changes. Based on microencapsulation technology, microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) have high specific surface area, and PCMs as core materials achieve isolation from the surrounding environment with the help of shell materials. Further, MEPCMs can remain constant temperature or change very little during melting endothermic process and exhibit unique advantages in the field of thermal energy storage and temperature control. With the development of microencapsulation technology, in addition to those known functions mentioned above, MEPCMs can be achieved many functions by utilizing the properties of the shell material or modifying it or by doping the material in the core material. In this paper, firstly, we introduce the types, properties and development of MEPCMs. Then, various multifunctional MEPCMs are summarized and analyzed based on the basic function of thermal energy storage or temperature control, with a focus on their multifunctional principle and performance in areas such as supercapacitors, chemical catalysis, solar photocatalysis, biology, optics, and flame retardancy, etc. Finally, the existing problems, solutions, and future research directions are put forward. 

Development and applications of multifunctional microencapsulated PCMs: A comprehensive review

Chemical accidents resulting from thermal runaway of chemical reactors can have severe consequences, including catastrophic damages to the public, society, property, and environment. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a methodology that can predict the safety status of reactors and eliminate the potential risk of thermal runaway timely. To this end, various thermal runaway criteria have been established to assess the safety status of reactors over the past decades. This opinion article provides a short review of classic criteria applied to distinguish between runaway and nonrunaway states of reactors. Particularly, the significance of divergence criterion in the field of thermal runaway criteria is emphasized. In addition, to illustrate the general application procedures of the divergence criterion, examples of its utilization in three research domains, including process safety assessment, process parameter optimization, and process monitoring and control, are given. In summary, the remaining challenges and future directions in the development of thermal runaway criteria, especially the divergence criterion, are discussed. 

Runaway criteria for predicting the thermal behavior of chemical reactors

Hydrogen leaks form storage tanks or pipelines could be ignited easily and causes jet flame accident. To better understand the hydrogen jet flame ignition, we experimentally studied the flame propagation characteristics and critical ignition criteria in present work. Based on the flame propagation process after ignition, the flame could be divided three types: upstream propagation flame, stagnant flame and downstream propagation flame. The temperature of different types of flame was also investigated. The result indicated that the high temperature zone was similar to the flame propagation direction. In addition, the maximum ignition distance under different conditions was studied. The maximum ignition distance was increased with the increasing of gas flow rate and jet nozzle diameter. Furthermore, to qualitatively explain the ignition, a criterion based on a critical Damköhler number was formulated to demonstrate the coupling effect of flow rate, nozzle diameter and ignition distance. 

Investigation on flame propagation characteristics and critical ignition criteria of hydrogen jet

The acid remaining in the nitrocellulose (NC) during the production process have some influence on its structure and stability. Herein, physicochemical properties, thermal behavior, and decomposition kinetics of NC before and after sulfuric acid treatment were thoroughly investigated using a series of analytical instruments in this paper. It is found that the nitrogen content and relative molecular weight of NC-0.968% that undergoing impregnation with sulfuric acid and drying is decreased by 0.58% and 16% (decreasing rate), respectively, suggesting that the presence of excess sulfuric acid leads to denitrification of NC at room temperature as well as breakage of the glucoside bond, with a greater effect on the latter. Moreover, the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) indicate that the presence of sulfuric acid did not cause significant changes in the crystalline structure of NC, but severely damage the microscopic morphology, resulting in a large number of micropores appearing on its fiber surface, which enhances the hygroscopicity of NC. In addition, the combined Model-based kinetic results indicate that the decomposition reaction process of NC- 0.968% has a step one more than that of pure NC, which is attributed to the acid-catalyzed denitrification of NC and the breaking of glucoside bonds. Combined with the experimental results of TG-DSC-FITR, it shows that the presence of acid mainly affects the initial decomposition process of NC, while the fracture of the glucose ring frame and oxygen bridge in the NC molecular structure is more dependent on the action of NO2 and the decomposition temperature.
