Imagining the missionary hero : juvenile missionary biographies, c.1870-1917

Following a review of the main approaches to the study of class in the social sciences, a critical/discursive approach is adopted to show how analysing an aspect of everyday life such as leisure and 'going out' can reveal the reproduction of dominant discourses about class. Forty-two middle-class young adults were taken on 'nights out' to bars and pubs and then interviewed later to generate group accounts of the people and places they encountered. An analysis of participants' talk about going out to bars and pubs is used to illustrate the ways in which class was constituted in their dialogue. Focusing on the distinction respondents made between students and locals we consider how working-class people are simultaneously rejected and desired and how a discourse of territoriality defines and reproduces class relations in commercial leisure spaces. We argue that social psychology has much to offer contemporary understandings of the ways in which social class is constituted and mobilized in everyday accounts of leisure and consumption, and discuss our analysis in the context of existing research. We end by considering the potential value of our distinctive method for the study of class relations in social psychology research.

Studies of the gender relations of information and communications technologies (ICTs) seldom deal with these relations as experienced in early childhood, except as located in schooling. The construction of identity in relation to technology is negotiated from an early age. In this article a technological strand is identified in childhood using 'experience stories', writing about specific situations or events on a specific theme, with the focus of analysis being on the theme, rather than on the individual. In reflecting on this technological strand of childhood the article tries to make sense of how everyday experiences serve as sites for constituting our relations with ICTs, and more personally, how they constitute relations for a young white working-class girl. The Hope of the World, painted by Harold Copping for the London Missionary Society (LMS) in 1915, is arguably the most popular picture of Jesus produced in Britain in the twentieth century. It was an iconic image in the Sunday school movement between 1915 and 1960, embodying the shift to a progressive child-centered pedagogy, and providing the inspiration for juvenile involvement in the missionary project. Millions of copies of the picture were sold globally and its vision of the world united in the loving embrace of Christ was the inspiration for many variations on the same theme. This article asks if the 1970s women's liberation slogan `the personal is political' has privileged a `psychologized', that is an individualistic, version of feminism which, being implicitly grounded in middle-class experiences and concerns, has made invisible those of working-class women. It looks at the problems encountered in trying to use psychology to explain reciprocal-as opposed to individual-concerns and psychoanalysis to explore working-class girls' entry into gendered identity. In doing so, the discussion draws upon Jessica Benjamin's work on cross-gender identification to explore the difficulties faced by daughters who learned from an early age of the relative powerlessness of their fathers. It argues that such experiences can be seen not as instances of individual pathologies, but as examples of how early consciousness of class positioning might provide the roots of women's adult political activity which is founded not on a gendered but on a classed identity.
