Chemical composition and phytotoxicity of essential oil from invasive plant, Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.

Mercury (Hg) is a persistent and dangerous heavy metal with genotoxic properties. Echinacea purpurea L. is a well-known therapeutic plant with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor properties. In this study, multi-protective role of Echinacea purpurea L. extract against toxicity caused by mercury(II) chloride (HgCI2) on Allium cepa L. investigated in a multifaceted way. As a consequence of 100 mgL-1 HgCI2 administration, root elongation, weight increase, germination rate, and mitotic index were reduced, whereas micronucleus frequency, chromosomal abnormalities frequency, meristematic cell injuries severity, malondialdehyde level, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activity were increased. On the other hand, co-administration of increasing doses of E. purpurea extract (265 mgL-1 and 530 mgL-1) and HgCI2 gradually alleviated all observed toxic effects of HgCI2. Protective role of E. purpurea extract against HgCI2-toxicity on A. cepa were clearly demonstrated in this study. The results of this study will lead to future researches investigating use of E. purpurea extract against genotoxic contaminants.

Assessment of Cytotoxicity Induced by Heavy Metal Arsenic Trioxide and Azo-Dye Metanil Yellow in Allium cepa Assay and Aqueous Plant Extracts Mediated Amelioration

Summary Allium cepa assay is performed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of anti-cancerous drugs namely, Doxorubicin and Erlotinib. The doses administered are much lower than the pharmaceutical concentrations. The objective of the work is to determine the safe dose(s) of the drugs after disposal to the environment for eco-safety monitoring. Assessments of mitotic indices and cytological aberrations observed in dividing and resting cells to untreated control suggest that the doses employed are sub-lethal to lethal. Types of cytological abnormalities encountered in treated cells indicate that both the drugs are clastogenic (fragments, rings, bridges, and cells with micronucleus) apart from aﬀecting the spindle apparatus (vagrant chromosomes and multipolarity) and cellular metabolism (stickiness of chromosomes and giant cells formation). The present results can be used as an index for safe dose(s) monitoring of the drugs for ecological safety.

Evaluation of Cytotoxicity Induced by the Anti-Cancerous Drugs Doxorubicin and Erlotinib in Allium cepa Assay for Eco-Safety Monitoring


 The discharge of dye loaded effluents from textile and food industries into natural water has skyrocketed in the last few years due to booming industrialization needed to serve a mushrooming population. The adulterated water poses a serious threat to human and aquatic life. The present work aims to engage electrochemical methods by designing an electrochemical sensor using a modified glassy carbon electrode with amine functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH2-fMWCNTs) to detect nanomolar concentration of Metanil Yellow (MY) which is an azo dye used illegally in food industry. Various experimental conditions, such as the supporting electrolyte, pH of the electrolyte, deposition potential, and deposition time were optimized for the best performance of the designed sensing platform by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). Under optimized conditions, the limit of detection of MY was found to be 0.17 nM. The catalytic degradation of the dye was also probed by the designed nanosensor electrochemically and the results were supported by UV-visible spectroscopic technique. The dye was found to follow pseudo first order kinetics with a degradation extent of 98.7 %. The obtained results hold great promise for safeguarding human and aquatic lives from the effects of toxic dye effluents.
