This study explored the use of multicylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (MC-DBD) plasma technology to eliminate diesel fuel contamination from the soil. This study also assessed the environmental impact of plasma-generated reactive species on soil properties, plant growth, and the safety of microbial and human skin cells using various analytical methods. MC-DBD plasma was characterized using the current-voltage analysis and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Gas Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to detect reactive species, such as O3, NO, NO2, N2O, and HNO3, in the plasma-treated air. The diesel fuel concentration in the soil was measured before and after plasma treatment using a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector. The efficacy of the MC-DBD plasma treatment was evaluated based on soil characteristics (pH and moisture), discharge parameters (power), and reactive species (O3 and NOx). Using only power of 30 W, the MC-DBD achieved a 94.19% removal of diesel fuel from the soil and yielded an energy efficiency of 1.78 × 10-2 m3/kWh within a 60-min treatment period. Neutral soil with a moisture content of 2% proved more effective in diesel fuel removal compared with acidic or alkaline soil with higher moisture content. O3 was the most efficient plasma-generated reactive species for diesel fuel removal and is involved in oxidation-induced fragmentation and volatilization. Overall, the potential of the MC-DBD plasma technology for remediating diesel fuel-contaminated soils is highlighted, and valuable insights for future applications are provided.

This study investigated the effects of spark dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) plasma on water sterilization and seed germination using an in-situ treatment method. The plasma diagnostics used I–V characteristics and optical emission spectroscopy. The electron, rotational, and vibrational temperature, as well as electron density were measured. The findings revealed that SDBD plasma treatment caused significant changes in the physicochemical properties of the liquids. In addition, the concentrations of H2O2, NO2− and NO3− were increased after 8 min of plasma treatment to 30, 40, and 100 mgL−1, respectively. The effectiveness of the SDBD plasma treatment was evaluated based on bacterial inactivation and seed germination. After 8 min of plasma treatment, an almost complete removal of E. coli and S. aureus was achieved. Furthermore, the germination of coriander seeds was enhanced when they were treated with SDBD plasma for 5 min. SDBD plasma shows promise for water sterilization, seed germination, and sustainability. 

Effects of spark dielectric barrier discharge plasma on water sterilization and seed germination

Abstract This study investigates the effects of nonthermal plasma characteristics on surface treatments of polyvinyl alcohol with various diagnostics such as Raman spectroscopy, work of adhesion, optical emission spectroscopy, and current–voltage measurements. Our findings demonstrate the importance of controlling the plasma's electron temperature and density to achieve the desired surface treatment outcomes. We show that plasma jets with varying electron temperatures are more appropriate for different surface treatments, with high electron temperatures than 1.1 eV suitable for functional group (C═O) insertion abiding macro‐scale surface roughness and low electron temperatures for plasma etching, which increased surface roughness significantly. Plasma electron temperatures between 1.1 and 1.3 eV are best for treatment as higher ones cause bond breaking while lower ones would etch the surface.

This paper investigates the effects of argon (Ar) and that of Ar mixed with ambient air (Ar-Air) cold plasma jets (CPJs) on 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) degradation using low input power. The introduction of ambient air into the Ar-Air plasma jet enhances ionization-driven processes during high-voltage discharge by utilizing nitrogen and oxygen molecules from ambient air, resulting in increased reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) production, which synergistically interacts with argon. This substantial generation of RONS establishes Ar-Air plasma jet as an effective method for treating 4-NP contamination in deionized water (DW). Notably, the Ar-Air plasma jet treatment outperforms that of the Ar jet. It achieves a higher degradation rate of 97.2% and a maximum energy efficiency of 57.3 gkW

Examining plasma-generated ozone and nitric oxide's role in synthetic textile dye water remediation and ecotoxicological analysis

Thin films of zinc oxide (ZnO) were deposited on glass substrates using chemical bath deposition (CBD) by varying the deposition time from one to three hours. The structural, morphological, optical, and responsiveness of the ZnO thin films to formaldehyde gas at room temperature were studied with respect to the nanoparticle grain sizes. The average grain sizes of the ZnO nanoparticles deposited for 1, 2, and 3 h were 19.6, 25.1, and 31.5 nm, while the average crystallite sizes were 73.07, 88.28, and 95.25 nm, respectively. The band-gap energies of the ZnO thin films deposited for 1, 2, and 3 h were found to be 3.27, 3.28, and 3.29 eV, respectively. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis of the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles confirmed their purity, and water contact angles indicated that longer deposition durations with larger grains enabled them to be more hydrophobic. The formaldehyde gas-sensing experiments showed the ZnO thin films deposited for larger grain sizes had a better gas response at room temperature than the rest. The maximum responses of the samples deposited for 1, 2, and 3 h were 5.5, 11.0, and 17.8, respectively, at 400 parts per million (ppm) of formaldehyde gas. Additionally, it was observed that the samples deposited for 1, 2, and 3 h could detect as low as 100, 25, and 12 ppm of formaldehyde, respectively.
