The present disclosure also provides systems and methods for sharding objects stored in a distributed storage system. In accordance with one embodiment disclosed herein, a key sharding technique is used. Key sharding is an advantageously efficient technique when dealing with an object containing a collection of key-value records. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, referenced chunks identified by the key shards may each store a subset of the collection of the key-value records, and the key-value records in the subset have key hashes that have a range of matching bits in common. One embodiment disclosed herein provides a method of performing a delta edit of a named object stored in a distributed storage system in which a payload of the named object is stored in key shards. Other embodiments, aspects and features are also disclosed.

Methods and Systems for Key Sharding of Objects Stored in Distributed Storage System

A system stores data, such as sensor data or other operational data, on a plurality of storage volumes in a sequence so as to allow for interpolations or other approximations of the data using a subset of the storage volumes in response to a request for information regarding that data. For example, a plurality of devices connect to the system to provide operational data, which is then stored in a specified sequence on a specified set of volumes. In response to a request for operational information regarding some or all of the devices, the system reads at least one of the volumes, and approximates the values of the data over a specified period of time. In some embodiments, the data may be buffered prior to storage, and a jitter analyzer determines whether the incoming data is anomalous relative to a baseline, which may be determined using related data sets.

Techniques for incrementally increasing media size in data storage systems using grid encoded data storage techniques are described herein. A grid of shards is created where each shard of the grid of shards has a first index, a second index and each shard also has an associated storage device configured with a storage capacity that is large enough to store the largest set of data on a shard. Upon determining to replace the storage devices of the grid with storage devices that have a different storage capacity, the storage devices can be incrementally replaced within the grid by first padding each shard of the grid of shards with a set of data values, replacing a data shard storage device with a device of the different storage capacity, and replacing a set of derived shard storage devices with devices of the different storage capacity.

Techniques described and suggested herein include systems and methods for optimizing performance characteristics for data archives stored on data storage systems using redundancy coding techniques by placing different processed portions of the data in disparate systems. For example, redundancy coded shards, which may include identity shards that contain unencoded original data of archives, may be stored on different types of systems to optimize for various retrieval use cases and implemented environments. Implementing systems may monitor various performance characteristics so as to adaptively account for changes to some or all of the monitored parameters.

Techniques for encoding data storage systems using grid-encoded data storage systems with non-parity linear redundancy encoding schemes are described herein. A grid of shards with derived shards and data shards is generated that is indexed by a first index and a second index and is configured so that each shard is reproducible from other shards with the same first index and is also reproducible from other shards with the same second index. The grid of shards is further configured so that each data row of the grid of shards has at least two derived shards and at least twice as many data shards as derived shards.

A data storage service redundantly stores data and keys used to encrypt the data. Data objects are encrypted with first cryptographic keys. The first cryptographic keys are encrypted by second cryptographic keys. The first cryptographic keys and second cryptographic keys are redundantly stored in a data storage system to enable access of the data objects, such as to respond to requests to retrieve the data objects. The second cryptographic keys may be encrypted by third keys and redundantly stored in the event access to a second cryptographic key is lost.

For example, to delete a collection of data, a condition on the collection of data's size may be enforced. The collection may be required to be empty, for example. These encryption techniques can use a transform fleet as an intermediary use between the unencrypted source and the encrypted volumes. The transform fleet can obtain data of the volume from one or both of two sources—an object storage “snapshot” a block storage “source volume”—and can then apply the appropriate encryption key for performing the encryption of a particular volume.
