A face plate assembly comprising two face plates (1,2) for positioning on opposite sides of a door (D) and mounting handles (9,10) for coupling to a latch and/or lock mechanism mounted within an edge of the door (D), one or more screw threaded fasteners (50) slidably mounted on a first one of the face plates (2), on the inside thereof, so as to be adjacent the door (D) when the first face plate (2) is positioned thereagainst, the or each screw threaded fastener (50) being slidably adjustable along the first face plate (2) for aligning with a fixing hole through the door (D), and a fixing plate (14) for positioning on the opposite side of the door (D) to the first face plate (2), said fixing plate (14) having one or more slots (20,21) therethrough corresponding to the path of adjustment of the screw threader fasteners (50) along the first face plate (2), whereby the first face plate (2) and the fixing plate (14) can be clamped to opposite sides of the door (D) by one or more screw fastening members (53) extending through the slot(s) in the fixing plate (14) and the fixing hole(s) in the door (D) and engaging with the screw threaded fastener(s) (50) of the first face plate (2), the second one of the face plates (1) being fastenable to the fixing plate (14).

• A newly developed Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 metallic glass (MG) is reported that performs better than existing implant materials in terms of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance in different SBF media and cell viability. • The reported MG exhibits superior corrosion resistance in four different stimulated body fluids which is attributed to the formation of a strong oxide passive layer on the surface which contains Dy 2 O 3 in addition to ZrO 2 and Al 2 O 3 . • The ratio of elastic-to-total work is 0.47 for Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 , suggesting that the implant will retain its shape even if it deforms in service. • Based on preliminary evidence, the Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 MG appears to be a promising material for implant applications. In the present research work, extensive investigation on microstructure, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, in-vitro biocompatibility and cell adhesion has been carried out on Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 metallic glass to propose new biomaterial. Structural analysis revealed the amorphous nature of Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 with no distinct crystalline phases. The mechanical properties of the metallic glass ribbon were determined using nanoindentation tests with hardness value as 4.68 GPa and elastic modulus 32.14 GPa. Potentiodyanamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis on Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 was studied in simulated body fluid. The cell viability studies in Zr 62 Cu 22 Al 10 Fe 5 Dy 1 metallic glass confirmed good in-vitro biocompatibility in a 72 h test. It is anticipated that the results of this work can provide an insight to further pursue investigation on the material for potential bioimplant applications. . 

Structural characterization, biocorrosion and in-vitro investigation on Zr62Cu22Al10Fe5Dy1 metallic glass for bio-implant applications

The ever-increasing demand for energy and environmental concerns have driven scientists to look for renewable and eco-friendly alternatives. Bio-based thermoelectric (TE) composite materials provide a promising solution to alleviate the global energy crisis due to their direct conversion of heat to electricity. Cellulose, the most abundant bio-polymer on earth with fascinating structure and desirable physicochemical properties, provides an excellent alternative matrix for TE materials. Here, recent studies on cellulose-based TE composites are comprehensively summarized. The fundamentals of TE materials, including TE effects, TE devices, and evaluation on conversion efficiency of TE materials are briefly introduced at the beginning. Then, the state-of-the-art methods for constructing cellulose-based TE composites in the forms of paper/film, aerogel, liquid, and hydrogel, are highlighted. TE performances of these composites are also compared. Following that, applications of cellulose-based TE composites in the fields of energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors) and sensing (e.g., self-powered sensors) are presented. Finally, opportunities and challenges that need investigation toward further development of cellulose-based TE composites are discussed.

ConspectusGiven this special issue's efforts to highlight the research emanating from HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and the trials and tribulations associated with their research, the authors have presented work associated with the characterization and application of cellulosic materials as renewable products. Despite challenges, the research completed in this laboratory at Tuskegee, a HBCU, hinges upon the many investigations of cellulose as a carbon-neutral, biorenewable material that can potentially replace environmentally unfriendly and hazardous petroleum-based polymers. Although cellulose is one of the most promising candidates, overcoming the challenge of its incompatibility (i.e., lack of good dispersion, interfacial adhesion, etc.) with most hydrophobic polymers due to its hydrophilic nature is critical to usage in plastic products across industries. Chemical isolations via acid hydrolysis and surface functionalities have emerged as new approaches to modulate the surface chemistry of cellulose to improve its compatibility and physical performance within the polymer composites. Recently, we have explored the influence of (1) acid hydrolysis and (2) chemical modifications via surface oxidation to ketones and aldehydes on the resulting macrostructural arrangements and thermal performance and (3) the application of crystalline cellulose as reinforcement agents in ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) composites.XRD structural characterizations of crystalline cellulose isolated from wheat straw under dissimilar acid hydrolysis conditions showed induced alterations in the native cellulose polymorph (CI). Mixing of the native polymorph (CI) with CIII was observed and found to be more prominent under sulfuric acid isolation conditions which is one of the more commonly used methods of chemical isolation. Thermal evaluations using TGA confirmed that the introduction of the mixed polymorphs changed the thermal behavior of the isolated crystalline cellulose. Further, FTIR analysis and Tollens testing of chemically oxidized crystalline cellulose via the Albright-Goldman reaction revealed the transformation of surface OH groups to ketones and aldehydes, respectively. We observed similar macrostructural disruption behavior to that of acid hydrolysis processing (i.e., mixing of polymorphs) for oxidation of crystalline cellulose, which had no negative impacts on the thermal stability of the cellulosic structure. The application of acid-hydrolyzed pristine cellulose (PC) as reinforcement agents in ABS composites showed increased thermal-mechanical performance as revealed by TGA and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA). As the ratio of crystalline cellulose increased, the thermal stability of the ABS composite increased, and at extremely high ratios, increased dimensional stability (i.e., low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value) was observed, expanding the application of ABS plastic products.
