In this article, we will examine some contrasted discourses on multilingualism that circulate nowadays in the field of education. Focusing on the cases of French-speaking Belgium and of the Franco-Ontarian community in Canada, we will show the existence of two discourses on multilingualism: one that insists on the positive value of multilingualism and that we consider as a consequence of social and economic changes brought by globalisation; and another that is much more a surrender of the purist conception of language rejecting ‘mixing’ and hybridism and that seems to support resistance towards unwanted consequences of this globalisation movements (especially migration movements). In our view, these discourses on multilingualism are ideological discourses aiming at legitimating or contesting the impacts of global capitalism and post-nationalism.

From “littérature voyageuse” to “littérature-monde”: The Manifesto in Context

The present study explores, from a contrastive point of view, the conditions that rule the political discourse in terms of linguistic politeness. By contrasting the data (examples drawn from press titles, mainly the French journal Le Monde Diplomatique and its’ translations into Greek), we will be able to discover the underlying operations and constraints that regulate the use of such markers and to reach conclusions about the existence or not of symmetrical uses of our two languages. The theoretical framework followed is that of Brown and Levinson and the one of the Theory of Enunciation. 
In the case of press titles translation, despite the possibility of using symmetrical structures in source text as well as in target text, different structures are mostly preferred. This discrepancy leads to hypothesis about different linguistic attitudes of each linguistic community reflected explicitly by the use of different syntactic/lexical markers. It is this awareness that enabled Brown and Levinson (1987: 248) to consider cross-cultural variation and recognise that some societies may be oriented towards one or the other type of politeness (i.e. negative or positive)», formulating the so called cultural ethos of each linguistic community.

Cultural Ethos Constructed in Press Titles and Their Translation

The present paper deals with the translation of an important stylistic element of the Lithuanian language: the diminutive suffixes and their derivatives. The translation of the meanings conveyed by these suffixes is a challenge, especially when translating into languages that do not possess such a wide range of diminutive suffixes or use this morphological device very seldom. This paper examines the Spanish version of the first part of the poem Metai (Las estaciones del ano, translated by Carmen Caro Dugo, 2013), by K. Donelaitis, as well as both translations into English of the same text. The comparative analysis of the Spanish and English versions can provide a more complete view of the means used by translators to convey the meanings denoted by the Lithuanian diminutive suffixes

Nous nous interessons dans cette contribution, publiee en deux parties, aux idees linguistiques de Lucien Tesniere (1893-1954). Si ce dernier est essentiellement connu pour la syntaxe structurale et pour certains concepts-cles comme ceux de valence ou de translation, en revanche son œuvre est beaucoup plus variee que ce a quoi on la reduit habituellement. Tesniere s’est occupe, en effet, a la fois de linguistique theorique, mais aussi de linguistique appliquee, au sens large du terme, puisqu’il a toujours developpe un interet majeur pour l’enseignement des langues et pour la geographie linguistique. Il s’est en outre tourne vers la traduction et l’analyse litteraire, en traduisant et commentant l’œuvre du poete slovene Oton Joupantchitch. L’article qui suit est consacre a la partie la plus theorique de la linguistique de Tesniere, sur laquelle nous nous penchons a partir de quatre points : la rehabilitation de la synchronie, la syntaxe structurale et son originalite, la typologie des langues et l’histoire des langues et du langage. La seconde partie de cette contribution, qui paraitra dans le prochain numero de Studies about languages, sera quant a elle consacree a l’aspect plus « pratique » de la linguistique tesnierienne, bien que celui-ci ne puisse pas etre separe clairement de la theorie, et se focalisera sur la didactique des langues, la geographie linguistique, la traduction et l’analyse litteraire.

If the principle of the arbitrary nature of the sign has prevailed in linguistics since the publication of Saussure’s Cours de linguistique generale, research on iconicity has however never been abandoned, and has recently given rise to an important amount of monographs and articles, which show that there is a motivated relationship between the signifier and the signified, and more generally between the form and the meaning, in a large number of cases. This article deals with the motivation of the verb in Czech, which has, as far as we know, never been studied precisely. We focus from this point of view on the categories of aspect (imperfective, perfective and frequentative) and of verbal person, which are the most important as regards the Czech verb, and we show that these categories are based on two kinds of motivation: a phonosymbolical motivation, and a motivation of quantity. This study intends to represent a contribution to Czech Linguistics as well as to General Linguistics.
