The preparation and characterization of a series of divalent 3d transition metal complexes supported by a tridentate planar bis(iminopyridine) ligand are reported. The complexes {2,6-[PhCN(tBu2C6H3)]2C5H3N}MBr2 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn), 1–6, were characterized by single crystal X-ray structural studies revealing complexes with pentacoordinate distorted square pyramidal coordination environments. This assembly of complexes provided a unique array for examining the relationship between experimental structure and computed electronic structure. While experimental structural features basically correlated with the Irving–Williams series, some clear deviations were rationalized through the computational analysis. A balance of bis(imino)pyridine/metal with bonding/antibonding π interactions was used to explain the divergent directions of Fe(II)–N and Co(II)–N bond lengths. Similarly, orbital details were used to justify the opposing change in Cu–Brap and Cu–Brbas bond lengths. Furthermore, computational analysis provided a unique method to document a surprising low bond order for the M–N bonds of bis(imino)pyridine ligand in this series.

Hexacoordinated cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes of a novel mixed ligand, N-(2-methylpyridine)-2-aminomethyl benzoic acid: structures, spectroscopic characterizations and redox studies

Seven new pink-coloured complexes of cobalt(II) sulphate with the hydrazides of cyclopropane-, cyclopentane-. cyclohexane-and cycloheptanecarboxylic, cyclopentaneacetic, cyclohexane-acetic and cyclohexanebutyric acids have been synthesized from CoSO4. 6H2O and the ligands. All the complexes precipitated as powders with two molecules of the ligand per cobalt atom except Co(CHBH)So4.o. 5H2O. The magnetic moments at room temperature l i e between 3.77 and 5.20 B.M. and are indicative of high-spin octahedral complexes with large o r bital contribution The electronic spectra exhibited a strong band a t 22.OO-24.OO kK which is typical of octahedral cobalt(II) complexes, while the IR spectra showed that the hydrazide molecules form chelate rings about the cobalt(I1) ion.

Complexes of Cobalt(II) Sulphate with Some Cyclocarboxylic Acid Hydrazides

Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pd(II) complexes have been prepared with formylhydrazide employing the chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, perchlorate, thiocyanate and nitrate salts. Complexes having 1 : 3, 1 : 2 and 1 : 1 metal ion to ligand ratios have been isolated. Characterization has been accomplished by elemental analyses, magnetic moment, conductance and spectra (visible, i.r. and far-i.r.). The ligand is bidentate and coordination occurs through carbonyl oxygen and terminal nitrogen.
