A new single-phase 15-level inverter with a reduced number of components for the Solar PV application is proposed in this paper. It is incorporate the proposed inverter with a boost converter to extract energy from the solar PV modules, the proposed inverter aids to generate fifteen stepped output voltage levels with lower THD. The proposed inverter can improve efficiency and reduce losses, cost, and complexity of the overall system. The conventional boost converter will boost the output voltage to a maximum voltage from Solar PV with MPPT(P&O). The proposed inverter is tested experimentally using the dSPACE RTI 1104 controller along with MATLAB/Simulink. A detailed comparison with existing MLIs with the proposed inverter. The work presents experimental results not only to show its efficiency but also to the effectiveness under different circumstances of linear and non-linear loads. The inverter is stable during the non-linear loads and well suits for grid-connected systems.

Design and Implementation of a Single-Phase 15-Level Inverter With Reduced Components for Solar PV Applications

A Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter (SCMLI) topology is proposed here, which can generate up to fifteen levels with one unit and can be extended further for getting higher levels. The proposed SCMLI has a lesser number of switching devices with respect to other recently proposed structures presented in this paper. It also has the capacitor self-balancing property. Power loss analysis has also been done using PLECS software. Maximum efficiency of 96.33 % has been achieved. A generalized comparative study has also been carried out with the newly presented topologies in different research articles considering several parameters. In order to validate the structure presented in this paper, simulation is done in Matlab®2018a, and the simulation results obtained are verified using an experimental prototype.

Over the years, multi-level inverter (MLI) usage has increased widely for several applications like motor drives, renewable energy source- (RES-) fed grids, and electric vehicles (EVs). In recent scenarios, the development of RES, grids, and EVs is in advanced mode, and this became the reason for innovations in recent MLI topologies. The new topologies have more advantages, unique features, and abilities to meet the advanced requirements. Therefore, these new topologies are preferable for recent applications. In this paper, a detailed review of recent MLI topologies, controllers, and PWM techniques is done by considering some physical aspects as well as some performance aspects. Also, the particular focus is on the MLI topologies, controllers, and PWM techniques for photovoltaic (PV) system-fed grids and microgrids to provide details for selecting the suitable MLI topology and PWM technique for PV systems. The detailed analysis of each topology is discussed for categorizing specific applications along with futuristic expansion aspects. The future research scope on MLI topologies for PV systems is summarized with appropriate comprehensive comparisons along with their unique features over other topologies. Also, the advanced controllers and PWM techniques are also discussed with advantages and their wide range of controlling abilities.

An Overview on Multi-Level Inverter Topologies for Grid-Tied PV System

Solar energy is one of the most suggested sustainable energy sources due to its availability in nature, developments in power electronics, and global environmental concerns. A solar photovoltaic system is one example of a grid-connected application using multilevel inverters (MLIs). In grid-connected PV systems, the inverter’s design must be carefully considered to improve efficiency. The switched capacitor (SC) MLI is an appealing inverter over its alternatives for a variety of applications due to its inductor-less or transformer-less operation, enhanced voltage output, improved voltage regulation inside the capacitor itself, low cost, reduced circuit components, small size, and less electromagnetic interference. The reduced component counts are required to enhance efficiency, to increase power density, and to minimize device stress. This review presents a thorough analysis of MLIs and a classification of the existing MLI topologies, along with their merits and demerits. It also provides a detailed survey of reduced switch count multilevel inverter (RSC-MLI) topologies, including their designs, typical features, limitations, and criteria for selection. This paper also covers the survey of SC-MLI topologies with a qualitative assessment to aid in the direction of future research. Finally, this review will help engineers and researchers by providing a detailed look at the total number of power semiconductor switches, DC sources, passive elements, total standing voltage, reliability analysis, applications, challenges, and recommendations.

A Review of Multilevel Inverter Topologies for Grid-Connected Sustainable Solar Photovoltaic Systems

This chapter suggests a novel 15-level inverter topology with improved power quality and reduced devices. The suggested topology possesses important advantages like increased number of levels per devices, low-voltage ripple and self-voltage balancing of capacitors, capability of supplying resistive–inductive loads, minimum on-state switches, reduced total harmonic distortion, and improved power quality of output voltage. The standing voltage on all semiconductors is less than maximum output voltage (Vo,max). Also, the average of normalized standing voltage on semiconductors is less than 50%. These properties decrease the cost, size, and loss of switches. Furthermore, the proposed topology does not require an H-bridge for generating negative voltage levels. So, the number of switches as well as the total standing voltage on semiconductors is reduced. The fundamental frequency method has been employed for generating the switching pulses. The superiority of proposed topology over other similar structures and its correct operation have been certified respectively by comparative analysis and simulation results.

A New and Generalized Structure of MLI Topology with Half-bridge Cell with Minimum Number of Power Electronic Devices

Recent advances in the domain of medium-voltage, high-power, and multilevel inverter have risen to such a level due to their amazing facts such as acceptable harmonic spectrum, ease in control, reduced EMI, filter-free circuit, reduced stress on switches, and reduced common-mode voltage. This paper describes a new single-phase structure of multilevel inverter, generalized in nature employing a smaller number of overall power components, especially the power switches. 9-level structure is thoroughly explained and discussed with necessary details. In addition, 13-level inverter is also designed and tested with the RL-Load. Extensive simulations are carried out in MATLAB and the corresponding experimental results verifies the performance of the proposed MLI. Nonetheless, the MLI topology is compared with some of the recent reported literatures and in every way considered better.

Implementation of a Multi-level Inverter (MLI) with a New Structure with Different Values of DC Sources

Now-a-days, the most emerging topic of research is converters especially multilevel inverters owe to its gigantic applications in cement factory, aerospace applications, ceramic industry etc. Multilevel inverter permits the usage of renewable-energy sources i.e. fuel cells, photovoltaic wind which can be simply interweaved to a multilevel inverter for the applications in higher power rating.The proposed work develops a reduced switches single-phase 7-level and 13-level inverter that is elaborately explained, analyzed and carried out in MATLAB/Simulink platform. Proposed inverter is flexible to work with same or different magnitudes of available DC supply. Nevertheless, a prototype is designed in the laboratory and the simulation results are justifies the experimental outcomes. Proposed inverter performs better to some of the key aspects of inverter i.e. cost, required space and complexity. Comparison with newly invented inverters has been added in this paper to proof the effectiveness of the proposed inverter.
