Assuming a cultural psychology approach, this study examines the life stories of 30 Israeli and Palestinian adolescent participants in a coexistence program. Prior to participation, youth identity was characterized by polarization in which an ingroup ideology is internalized with little understanding of the outgroup’s ideological perspective. Three identity-related outcomes emerged following participation. Identity transcendence, in which a reduction in salience of ingroup ideology was accompanied by increased recognition of outgroup ideological legitimacy, characterized the most common immediate outcome. Identity accentuation characterized the long-term impact for most youth, whose ideological identifications ultimately conformed to an ingroup identity narrative. I n January 2002, Wafa Idris, a twenty-seven-year-old Palestinian woman, strapped ten kilograms of explosives to her body and killed herself and two Israelis on a crowded Jerusalem street. Idris was the first Palestinian female suicide bomber, to be followed by nine others and several dozen failed attempts. The female suicide bomber is a social phenomenon that has left Israel and the West shocked, signaling (in both Arab and Western views) an escalation in the conflict. Idris was not the first Palestinian woman to be recruited for the fight for national liberation, as women have taken part in the Palestinian struggle from its onset, with some, including Leila Khaled and Dalal el Moughrabi, having partaken in highly publicized hijacking operations. Idris was not the first female suicide bomber either, with Hezbollah and the Tamil Tigers utilizing female suicide bombers since the 1980s. The reactions to Idris’s actions vary widely, as labels such as martyr, hero, monster, and terrorist indicate. But reactions in the Arab world, in Israel, and in the West cannot be reduced to simple labels. Instead, the reactions all highlight junctures of ideological crises in the perceived roles of women in armed struggles, religion, and traditional gendered settings. Particularly in the Arab world these actions were not simply hailed but actually debated—pragmatically, morally, and, most notably, religiously. Children and adolescents in Sierra Leone have suffered through a decade of catastrophic violence and dislocation resulting from a brutal civil war. Many have been forced to flee their villages and have found refuge in United Nations refugee camps in neighboring countries. These children have witnessed the torture, maiming, and murder of family, friends, and neighbors. Some have been forced to carry arms or to serve as domestic and sexual servants to predatory rebel combatants. All have confronted enormous hardship and loss. This paper identifies three coping strategies employed by adolescents in a large refugee camp. Implications for professional practice are discussed.

Coping with War: Three Strategies Employed by Adolescent Citizens of Sierra Leone

This study reports data of psychological well-being and self-esteem of Gaza Palestinian, Israeli Bedouin Arab, and Israeli Jewish adolescents during the time shortly before and after the signing of the Israeli-Palestinian Autonomy Agreement. The study is a partial follow-up to previous research examining the impact of violence, warlike conditions, and extreme social change on the mental health adjustment of adolescents of this region. Results of the Derogatis Symptom Checklist, revised and Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory showed the following: (a) psychopathology was significantly higher among Gaza youth, while Israeli Jewish and Bedouin youth showed lower levels; (b) youth from Gaza had the lowest levels of self-esteem, while there were no differences between Israeli Jewish and Bedouin youth; and (c) despite the long interval that had elapsed between the first (amid the Intifada) and second administrations (subsequent to the Oslo accords) of the measures, and the changing conditions, there was minimal evidence of change in levels of distress.
