The personal and social characteristics of pharmacy practitioners that predispose them to reacting in a certain way to a change in practice are examined. Individuals tend to choose vocations they perceive to be a match with their personality. Studies suggest a dominant personality type among pharmacists characterized by a strong sense of responsibility, conscientiousness, practicality, logic, and, in about 20% of practitioners, fear of interpersonal communication. As the profession seeks to adapt to new practice models, individual practitioners may find a significant mismatch between their personality and aspects of the new models. Pharmacists' professional socialization-the process by which expected roles, behaviors, and attitudes are acquired-is another major contributor to their receptiveness to changes in practice. Managers wanting to promote practice changes face considerable variance in the professional socialization of their individual staff members. Few staff members have been socialized for pharmaceutical care. Some may not have any of the values or attitudes of the idealized professional, and may simply have "a job." Although personality is largely fixed, professional socialization is an ongoing process, so there is potential to resocialize practitioners for new practice models. Pharmacists are shaped by their personalities and professional socialization. Conflict may occur if a pharmacist's personality does not mesh with new professional roles. Most pharmacists will need resocialization to prepare them for changes in practice.

The Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) preferences were obtained for students in 10 classes at four different schools of pharmacy in the United States (N = 832), and for a sample of practicing pharmacists (N = 170). It was found that, except for three isolated instances, the MBTIpersonalitypreferences of all students studied were statistically similar. The MBTI preferences of students were statistically similar to those of practicing pharmacists on the Extravert/Introvert and Sensing/ Intuitive preferences. They differed on the Thinking/Feeling preferences in that more students had the feeling (people oriented) preference, and on the Judging/Perceiving preferences in that more students had a perceiving (adaptable, open) preference. Personality types of pediatric dentists: comparative analysis and associated factors.

Objective. To determine, using the Gordon Personal Profile-Inventory (GPP-I), if the personality traits of first-year pharmacy students match the traits required for patient-centered practice. Methods. The GPP-I, which measures the personality traits of ascendency, responsibility, emotional stability, sociability, cautiousness, original thinking, personal relations, and vigor, was administered to incoming pharmacy students at the beginning of their first semester. Results. The pharmacy school had attracted students with strong traits of original thinking, followed by personal relations, and vigor. The students, however, were limited in emotional stability and ascendency. Conclusion. The pharmacy profession needs to be more proactive in projecting the desired image and communicate its increasingly challenging and patient-oriented practice to attract individuals whose personalities are conducive to current practice models.

Patient-oriented Personality Traits of First-year Pharmacy Students

This his article reports the findings of a study conducted to investigate the personality types of Chinese dental school applicants. The Chinese version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (Form G) was used to assess the personality styles of 332 dental school applicants from the mainland of China. The results of the MBTI for Chinese dental school applicants were compared with a previous study of applicants from the U.K. A higher percentage of this group of Chinese applicants scored higher for Introversion (I) than Extroversion (E); both Chinese and English applicants preferred Judging (J) to Perceiving (P). The dominant personality types in Chinese applicants were ISTJ, ESTJ, and ISFP. The findings suggest that the personality types of Chinese dental students may be somewhat different from the personality profiles exhibited by dental students from other nations. The findings may be of value to individuals who desire to investigate personality type differences among dental students with different cultural backgrounds.

Personality Types of Chinese Dental School Applicants

The purpose of this study was (1) to determine the personality characteristics of dental hygiene students, and (2) to determine if dental hygiene students have personality characteristics similar to those of the general population. Students from three non-baccalaureate degree programs were requested to complete a demographic questionnaire and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Eighty-six percent of the 124 students responded. The MBTI data was analyzed using frequency distributions, electivity indices, and chi-square analyses. Individuals categorized as ESFJ (extraversion, sensing, feeling, and judging) and ISFJ (introversion, sensing, feeling, and judging), two of the possible 16 MBTI personality types, comprised 39% of the sample. These two personality types were found in significantly greater numbers in the study population than in a random sample of the general population. People with the ISTJ (introversion, sensing, thinking, and judging), INFP (introversion, intuition, feeling, and perception), and INFJ (introversion, intuition, feeling, and judging) MBTI personality types were found in significantly lesser numbers in the study population than in a random sample of the general population. This suggests that dental hygiene students are not drawn at random from the general population. Self-knowledge, as measured by the MBTI, could prove beneficial for prospective dental hygiene students, students currently enrolled in dental hygiene programs, and educators. Additionally, practicing dental hygienists might find that the MBTI personality assessment results could help them identify career paths in the field that would enhance career fulfillment, thereby increasing the retention of professionals in the field.
