Potential of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and sugarcane bagasse fibers for thermal insulation application – A review

The coating material used for the manufacture of polyurethane paints is a coating of hybrid organic-inorganic materials based on palm oil (oleic acid). Polyols are produced from the synthesis of oleic acid by adding organic and inorganic ingredients. Chitosan and bentonite are organic and inorganic elements, which are used to improve thermal capability and antibacterial properties of polyurethane paint produced. Hybrid bentonite-chitosan is then synthesized with polyols and isocyanate is added, namely TDI (Toluene Diisocyanate) to form polyurethane. In the FTIR spectrum of the polyol on O-H bond at Wavelength 3210.25 cm-1, C-H bond at Wavelength 2856.87 cm-1 and C = O bond at Wavelength 1610.86 cm-1, and hybrid bentonitechitosan of FTIR Analysis Chitosan: -OH group at Wavelength 3250 cm-1, N-H at 3545 cm-1, C = O at wavelength 1681 cm-1, C-H group at Wavelength 2810 cm-1. Bentonite: -OH group at Wavelength 3435 cm-1, Si-O group at Wavelength of 1161 cm-1 and Al-O and Si-O groups at Wavelength 820 cm-1. Aliphatic C-H Cluster at 2815 cm-1 Wavelength and 1125 cm-1 Wavelength indicates the presence of a C-O group. While the results of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) from polyurethane products and with the addition of hybrid bentonite-chitosan namely polyurethane paints produced mixed with chemicals and the main ingredients are polyols from palm oil (oleic acid) while small white clumps greyish namely hybrid bentonite-chitosan which has been mixed into polyurethane paint. This study produced a hybrid material of benthicchitosan as a filler in the manufacture of polyurethane paint.

Poly lactic acid or poly lactide (PLA) is a natural polymer that is biodegradable, thermoplastic and is an aliphatic polyester made from renewable materials such as young kepok banana starch. Poly lactic acid with the chemical formula CH3CH(OH)COOH is a biodegradable polymer obtained from the combination of lactic acid monomers. Therefore, in this study the PLA polymer as a matrix was added with fillers in the form of Coir and Chitosan. Coir is a coconut fiber that has been widely used by researchers for decades. Chitosan has been widely used as an important and promising biopolymer material in tissue engineering because of its anti-microbial activity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. The characteristics resulting from the combination of these three materials resulted in 4 samples, namely the fixed variable PLA with variations of Coir and Chitosan. Sample 1 Coir/Chitosan ( 90:10 (%)) produces a tensile strength value of 80 MPa. Sample 2 Coir/Chitosan (80:20 (%)) yielded a tensile strength of 55 MPa. Samples of 3 Coir/Chitosan (70:80 (%)) yielded a tensile strength of 48 MPa. Samples of 4 Coir/Chitosan (60:40 (%)) produced a tensile strength of 30 MPa. The FTIR test on sample 1 resulted in a new compound found in the PLA/Coir/Chitosan composite, namely the compound N=C=O which is an isocyanate group at the peak of the 2279.86 cm-1 group. While the SEM test which shows the physical structure of the sample composition of PLA with the addition of Coir/Chitosan (90:10%) is the sample with the best morphology.

Characteristic of poly lactid acid (pla)/ coir with addition of chitosan variations for reviewing plastic materials

Polyurethanes (PU) is one of the most widespread material in the world. Polyurethanes is an important division of a synthetic polymer that has been used widely included in biomedical applications. Utilization of chitosan for anti-microbial properties of the material is also performed in this study, including testing to comprehend the development of harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, the current development of the science of nanotechnology is not only to produce the anti-bacterial material but also able to resist the thermal resistant. Therefore in this study, dispersion of bentonite nanocomposite as a filler material in the matrix as a reinforcement polyurethane to thermal insulation and improved mechanical properties of the coating materials. The results of the analysis of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) have demonstrated the formation of clusters urethane N-H in the compound polyurethane palm oil, the reaction takes for 6 hours at a temperature of 80°C as evidenced by absorption wave number N-H widening out at 3320 cm-1 and 3480 cm-1. Analysis of X-ray diffraction (X-RD) is an effective method for measuring the crystal structure of pure bentonite and bentonite nanocomposite shows the result of d-spacing pure bentonite was 1.798 nm, pure chitosan was 1.142 nm, bentonite nanoparticles was 2.055 nm, chitosan nanoparticles was 1.571 nm respectively and polyurethane/ bentonite/chitosan (PU/B/CH) nanocomposites were 3.386 nm. This d-spacing larger than that of the pure bentonite and chitosan.

Reviewed from the current technological required a new methods to capable offering a high profit value without overriding the quality. The development of composite technology is now beginning to shift from traditional composite materials based petroleum to natural fibers composite. In the present study, aim to made specimens using natural fibers in form of EFB as a composite reinforcedment with Polyethylene Terephtalate (PET) derived from Plastic bottles waste as matrix with mixed composition parameters and time-tolerance in the mixing process to build a biocomposite material. The characterization of mechanical properties includes tensile test (ASTM D638-01) and bending test (ASTM D790-02) followed by thermal analysis using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and morphological analysis using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The analysis effect of EFB, Ijuk and PET mixtures on the composite matrix is very influential with mechanical properties characterization, including tensile test and bending strength. The results demonstrated that from the sample named : 50 : 25: 25, hybrid composites showed improved properties such as tensile strength of 167 MPa while the 90:05:05 based composites exhibited tensile strength values of 30 MPa, respectively. In term the flexural test the best result of composition on the properties with 10 minutes duration time its load value 7,5 Mpa for 80:10:10.
