Preconception health behaviours: A scoping review.

Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are sometimes used by individuals who desire to improve the outcomes of their fertility treatment and/or mental health during fertility treatment. However, there is little comprehensive information available that analyzes various CAM methods across treatment outcomes and includes information that is published in languages other than English. This scoping review examines the evidence for 12 different CAM methods used to improve female and male fertility outcomes as well as their association with improving mental health outcomes during fertility treatment. Using predefined key words, online medical databases were searched for articles (n = 270). After exclusion criteria were applied, 148 articles were analyzed in terms of their level of evidence and the potential for methodological and author bias. Surveying the literature on a range of techniques, this scoping review finds a lack of high quality evidence that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) improves fertility or mental health outcomes for men or women. Acupuncture has the highest level of evidence for its use in improving male and female fertility outcomes although this evidence is inconclusive. Overall, the quality of the evidence across CAM methods was poor not only because of the use of research designs that do not yield conclusive results, but also because results were contradictory. There is a need for more research using strong methods such as randomized controlled trials to determine the effectiveness of CAM in relation to fertility treatment, and to help physicians and patients make evidence-based decisions about CAM use during fertility treatment.

In holy Quran, Islamic hadiths and narrations has encouraged consumption of palm date during pregnancy, labor and after that. Also, some recent investigations have shown that consumption of palm date could lead to a safe labor. So, this study aimed to review the effects of palm date consumption on safe labor. This review was done by searching on PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Ebesco, Embase, and ISC by entering Phoeniceae, Phoenix dactylifera, Palm, Date Palm, Date Palm Fruit, Date Fruit, Labor Onset, Pregnancies, and Gestation as keywords. In this study, clinical trial studies which were published until May 2017 were reviewed. We included studies that were done on human. Based on findings, date consumption can lead to increase of cervical dilation and effacement, and onset of spontaneous labor, and decrease need to induction with oxytocin, duration of gestation, duration of labor and postpartum hemorrhage. Results indicated that in line to Islamic recommendation, date could be consume as a natural and non-expensive, available and without side effects substances for a safe labor.

Review on the effects of palm date consumption on safe labor: An Islamic recommendation

Background: Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), particularly herbal and alternative medicine supplements, for preconception care and fertility management is becoming increasingly common. Aims: To determine the factors associated with the use of CAMs by women for preconception care. Materials and Methods: 412 women who had visited an antenatal 'first visit' clinic situated at a Brisbane obstetric hospital or had visited a private ultrasound clinic in the same city for the purposes of a routinely indicated ultrasound scan in the first trimester were recruited into the study. Data were collected via a cross-sectional questionnaire. Results: Complementary and alternative medicines (not including multivitamins) were used during preconception by 8.3% of women attending for obstetric care. Approximately half (55.8%) of women taking herbal and alternative medicines ceased these medications on discovery of their pregnancy, though fewer (17.4%) ceased taking multivitamin supplements. Baseline characteristics (age, education and income) are not significantly different between CAM users and those who did not take CAMs preconception. The results of statistical analyses showed that only visiting a practitioner to check for health (OR = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.33, 3.00) and trying to lose weight prior to pregnancy (OR = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.00, 2.36) were the key predictors for women using CAM during preconception. Conclusions: Women do consume CAMs to enhance preconception care to a certain extent, though CAM users remain in the minority. CAM users also tend to cease use once pregnant.
