Scientific advances are continually improving the knowledge of acne and contributing to the refinement of treatment options; it is important for clinicians to regularly update their practice patterns to reflect current standards. The Global Alliance to Improve Outcomes in Acne is an international group of dermatologists with an interest in acne research and education that has been meeting regularly since 2001. As a group, we have continuously evaluated the literature on acne. This supplement focuses on providing relevant clinical guidance to health care practitioners managing patients with acne, with an emphasis on areas where the evidence base may be sparse or need interpretation for daily practice.

Practical management of acne for clinicians: An international consensus from the Global Alliance to Improve Outcomes in Acne

Background Several studies have shown an association of acne vulgaris with depression and anxiety, but a quantitative review has not yet been conducted. Objective We sought to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis that elucidates the association of acne vulgaris with depression and anxiety. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis of literature published before October 1, 2019 from the PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Cochrane databases was conducted. We used a metaanalytic approach to perform a random effects analysis comparing individuals with and without acne. Subgroup analyses between studies included age, study setting, and geographic region. Results Forty-two studies were included. We found a significant association of acne vulgaris with depression (r = 0.22 [95% confidence interval 0.17-0.26, P  Limitations Inconsistency between publications regarding acne and outcome ascertainment, data reporting, and studies with no control group posed considerable barriers to synthesizing all available published literature. Conclusions Because of an increased risk for depression and anxiety, clinicians should pursue aggressive treatment of acne and consider psychiatric screening or referrals.

Acne vulgaris and risk of depression and anxiety: A meta-analytic review

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs in the sebaceous glands of the hair follicles. Depressed acne scars, also known as depressed scars, remain after recovery. Clinical treatments of depressed scars include chemical peels, surgical treatments, radio frequency treatments, and laser treatments. Ultra-pulse carbon dioxide (CO2) fractional laser treatment has become the main method for treating depressed scars in recent years, but there are no systematic reports on the effectiveness and safety of this treatment.English databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Ovid-Medline, were searched to retrieve relevant articles. The search period ran from the establishment of the databases to April 2021. The search terms included CO2 lattice laser, depressed acne scars, depressed scars, and effectiveness.A total of 6 articles comprising 467 patients with depressed acne scars were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that patients treated with ultra-pulsed CO2 fractionated laser scored higher in skin smoothness compared to other methods [standard mean difference (SMD) =0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.13-0.84; P=0.008], and significantly higher total skin lesion scores (SMD =0.35, 95% CI: -0.00 to 0.70; P=0.05).A total of 6 articles were included in this study on the clinical efficacy of the ultra-pulse CO2 fractional laser in the treatment of depressed acne scars. The study found that compared to other treatments, this laser had a better curative effect in terms of the effective rate and patient skin smoothness score.

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of the ultra-pulse CO2 fractional laser in the treatment of depressed acne scars

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a skin disease that is commonly seen and causes scar formation especially when left untreated. It can cause serious psychological comorbidities due to the intense involvement of appeared areas such as face and also being common in adolescence in which the body perception is not yet well established. Although psychiatric comorbidities frequently accompany AV patients in dermatology, they almost never directed to dermatology-psychiatry liaison clinics. Depression, anxiety, stress, decreased self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and even suicide attempts are too frequent to ignore in these patients, and many studies have been conducted on the positive or controversial effects of acne treatments. For this reason, serious responsibilities fall to dermatologists. They should not treat AV lesions only, but also to determine the AV patients' psychological conditions and to direct them to get help when necessary.
