Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have been classified according to the atomic size difference, heat of mixing (� H mix ) and period of the constituent elements in the periodic table. The BMGs discovered to date are classified into seven groups on the basis of a previous result by Inoue. The seven groups are as follows: (G-I) ETM/Ln-LTM/BM-Al/Ga, (G-II) ETM/Ln-LTM/BM-Metalloid, (G-III) Al/Ga-LTM/BMMetalloid, (G-IV) IIA-ETM/Ln-LTM/BM, (G-V) LTM/BM-Metalloid, (G-VI) ETM/Ln-LTM/BM and (G-VII) IIA-LTM/BM, where ETM, Ln, LTM, BM and IIA refer to early transition, lanthanide, late transition, group IIIB–IVB and group IIA-group metals, respectively. Classification of Bulk Metallic Glasses by Atomic Size Difference, Heat of Mixing and Period of Constituent Elements and Its Application to Characterization of the Main Alloying Element

Bulk metallic glass (BMG) formers are multicomponent alloys that vitrify with remarkable ease during solidification. Technological interest in these materials has been generated by their unique properties, which often surpass those of conventional structural materials. The metastable nature of BMGs, however, has imposed a barrier to broad commercial adoption, particularly where the processing requirements of these alloys conflict with conventional metal processing methods. Research on the crystallization of BMG formers has uncovered novel thermoplastic forming (TPF)-based processing opportunities. Unique among metal processing methods, TPF utilizes the dramatic softening exhibited by a BMG as it approaches its glass-transition temperature and decouples the rapid cooling required to form a glass from the forming step. This article reviews crystallization processes in BMG former and summarizes and compares TPF-based processing methods. Finally, an assessment of scientific and technological advancements required for broader commercial utilization of BMGs will be made.

Processing of Bulk Metallic Glass

We report the unusual glass-forming ability (GFA) of a family of Cu-based alloys, Cu46Zr47–xAl7Yx (0<x<=10, in at. %), and investigate the origin of this unique property. By an injection mold casting method, these alloys can be readily solidified into amorphous structures with the smallest dimension ranging from 4 mm up to 1 cm without detectable crystallinity. Such superior GFA is found primarily due to the alloying effect of Y, which lowers the alloy liquidus temperature and brings the composition closer to a quaternary eutectic. Other beneficial factors including appropriate atomic-size mismatch and large negative heat of mixing among constituent elements are also discussed.

Unusual Glass-Forming Ability of Bulk Amorphous Alloys Based on Ordinary Metal Copper

It has been well documented that the maximum thickness of as-cast glassy samples attainable through conventional metallurgical routes is the decisive criteria for measuring the glass-forming ability (GFA) of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Here we report the exceptionally high GFA of an FeCoCrMoCBY alloy which can be fabricated in the form of glassy rods with a maximum sample thickness of at least 16mm. It is demonstrated that, by substituting Fe with a proper amount of Co in a previously reported Fe-based BMG alloy, the glass formation of the resultant new alloy can be extensively favored both thermodynamically and kinetically. The new ferrous BMG alloy also exhibits a high fracture strength of 3500MPa and Vickers hardness of 1253kgmm−2.

Exceptionally high glass-forming ability of an FeCoCrMoCBY alloy

Minor alloying addition or microalloying technology has already shown dramatic effects on glass formation and thermal stability of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). This paper intends to provide a comprehensive review of recent developments of this technology in the field of BMGs. The beneficial effects of minor alloying additions on the glass formation and the thermal stability of BMGs will be summarized and analyzed. In addition, principles and guidelines for future application of this technology will also be proposed.

Role of minor alloying additions in formation of bulk metallic glasses: A Review

New Ni-based bulk amorphous alloys in the alloy system Ni–Ti–Zr–(Si,Sn) were developed through systematic alloy design based upon the empirical rules for high glass forming alloys. Small additions of Si and/or Sn significantly improved the glass forming ability (GFA) of the alloys Ni57Ti23−xZr20 (Si,Sn)x leading to a Ni-based bulk amorphous alloy. The amorphous ribbons of the alloys Ni57Ti23−xZr20 (Si,Sn)x exhibited very high glass transition temperatures (Tg > 823 K), crystallization temperatures (Tx > 883 K), and large undercooled liquid regions (δTx > 50 K) implying the high GFA of the alloys. Fully amorphous rods with the diameter of up to 2 mm can be fabricated by a copper mold casting method. Development of the new Ni-based bulk amorphous alloys having high Tg,Tx, and δTx expands the practical applications of amorphous alloys as structural materials.

Ni-based bulk amorphous alloys in the Ni–Ti–Zr–(Si, Sn) system

Phase stability and transformations of the icosahedral phase (I-phase) in a 41.5Zr41.5Ti17Ni alloy were investigated using melt-spun ribbons and arc-melted bulk samples. A perfect I-phase can be formed directly from liquid through the melt-spinning technique. The I-phase formed in the ribbon is thermodynamically stable and transforms to W-phase, a 1/1 rational approximant above 565 °C. Formation of the perfect I-phase during annealing treatment of the arc-melted sample is very sluggish. Various types of approximants exist as intermediate states for the transformation of crystalline phases to a perfect I-phase.
