Abstract The characteristics of pore-scale two-phase flow are of significance to the effective development of oil and gas resources, and visualization has gradually become one of the hot spots in the research of pore-scale two-phase flow. Based on the pore structure of rock, this research proposed a microscopic glass etching displacement experiment and a Navier–Stokes equation based finite element simulation to study the pore-scale gas–water two-phase flow. Then, this research conducted the proposed methods on the type I, type II and type III tight sandstone reservoirs in the Penglaizhen Formation of western Sichuan Basin, China. Results show that the outcomes of both the microscopic glass etching displacement experiment and the finite element simulation are by and large consistent. The water distributed in the large pores is displaced, and the trapped water mainly exists in the area induced by flow around high-permeability pores, perpendicular pores and disconnected ends of pores. The microscopic glass etching displacement experiment is conducive to better observing the phenomenon of a viscous finger-like breakthrough and air jumps in migration flows in narrow throats, while the finite element simulation has the advantages of cost effectiveness, easy operation and strong experimental reproducibility.

Pore-scale gas–water flow in rock: Visualization experiment and simulation

:Upscaling transmissivity near the wellbore is expected to be useful for well performance prediction. This article ascertains the need of upscaling by comparing several numerical schemes and presents an approach to upscale transmissivity in the near-well region. This approach extends the Laplacian method with skin, which was successfully applied to the parallelepiped flow case, to radial flow case in the vicinity of wellbore through a nonuniform gridding technique. Several synthetic fields with different stochastic models are chosen to check the efficiency of this method. Both flow and transport simulations are carried out in finite heterogeneous confined aquifers to evaluate the results. It is demonstrated that the proposed method improves the ability of predicting well discharge or recharge and solute transport on the coarse scale in comparison with other schemes by examining the uncertainty propagation due to upscaling.

This paper introduces a 3D FEM simulator for multiphase flows in porous media and its applications through consecutive consulting projects in the past three years. Based on the three-dimensional finite element method for two-phase flow of a liquid (underground water) and an immiscible or partly soluble gas (air, methane, CO2, etc.) seepage flows in porous media, the corresponding partial differential simultaneous equations and their numerical discretization method as well as the sorption/diffusion formulations are described. The simulator has been mainly applied to simulate both the combustible gas and water flows induced by a step-wise excavation process in sedimentary rock for disaster prevention during underground excavation for nuclear waste disposal. Furthermore, the simulator has been applied to predict the coal mine gas and water flows induced by face advancement in coal mining. These practical application examples are given in this paper.
