Systematic study on mechanical and electronic properties of ternary VAlN, TiAlN and WAlN systems by first-principles calculations

Martensitic stainless steel (MSS) coatings with different vanadium (V) contents (0-1.0 wt%) by microalloying have been successfully fabricated utilizing a unique laser cladding technique. The microstructure and properties of the resulting MSS coatings, with and without element V addition, have been carefully investigated by various advanced techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, microhardness tester, universal material testing machine, and electrochemical workstation. It was found that the V-free coating was mainly composed of martensite (M) and ferrite (F), trace M23C6 and M2N, while the V-bearing coatings consisted of M, F, M23C6, and VN nano-precipitates, and their number density increased with the increase of V content. The V microalloying can produce a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the resulting MSS laser-cladded specimens. As the V content increased, the elongation of the specimen increased, while the tensile strength and microhardness increased firstly and then decreased. Specifically, the striking comprehensive performance can be optimized by microalloying 0.5 wt% V in the MSS coating, with microhardness, tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of 500.1 HV, 1756 MPa, 1375 MPa, and 11.9%, respectively. However, the corrosion resistance of the specimens decreased successively with increasing V content. The microstructure mechanisms accounting for the property changes have been discussed in detail.

Influence of Vanadium Microalloying on Microstructure and Property of Laser-Cladded Martensitic Stainless Steel Coating

Structural, mechanical and electronic properties study on group 5 transition metals ternary mononitrides from first-principles calculations

Four PTFE/PI-PAI coatings filled with different contents of VN were designed to improve the tribological properties of engine bearing bush. These composite coatings were prepared on copper alloy substrates by liquid spraying. The tribological properties of these coatings at different temperatures and different lubrication ways were studied. Results show that the wear mechanisms of these coatings under dry sliding wear are transformed from adhesive wear at room temperature to abrasive wear at high temperatures under 8 wt% and 12 wt% VN. The coating under 4 wt% VN has the best wear resistance. As the content of VN exceeds 8 wt%, the hardness and tribological properties of these polymer coatings are decreased due to the agglomerated materials. The CoFs (coefficients of friction) of these composite coatings under 0 wt% VN and 4 wt% VN at 150 °C are lower than those at room temperature. On the contrary, as the VN exceeds 8 wt%, these CoFs under high temperature are higher than those at room temperature. The wear rate of the composite coating under 4 wt% VN increases with the temperature under oil lubrication. However, the wear rates of these coatings under dry sliding wear show a trend of first decrease and then increase with temperature. The non-uniformly softened polymers and VN, agglomeration of large particle materials, and the characteristics of oil viscosity under rising temperature and different frictional contact are the main reasons.

With the rapid development of the photovoltaic (PV) industry, the amount of PV silicon (Si) produced by cutting is also increased. Therefore, recycling PV Si produced by PV cutting is critical. Herein, we used PV Si to design a kind of boron-doped porous silicon/carbon (B-Si/C) composites through acid etching and freeze-drying methods. The B-Si/C has a uniform size (25–35 nm), rich pores and good dispersibility. Porous Si doped with B can shorten the ion transmission distance. Simultaneously, the outer carbon layer of B-Si/C can relieve the volume expansion of the Si nanoparticles and prevent the Si nanoparticles from agglomerating during charge–discharge cycles. When applied as anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the B-Si/C exhibits superior electrochemical performance with a commendable capacity of 1240 mA h g−1 at 420 mA g−1 after 100 cycles. It is very viable environmentally and economically to produce advanced high-capacity anode materials for LIBs using PV Si.
