The electronic and crystalline structures of thin epitaxial DyNi films grown in situ by codeposition of both constituents onto a W(110) substrate followed by annealing at $500\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\mathrm{C}$ were studied by angle-resolved valence-band photoemission and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The obtained experimental data are in good agreement with results of local-density-approximation calculations in bulk geometry. Further investigations included supercell calculations. According to the latter investigations the observed $(3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)$ overstructure of the LEED pattern and a Dy $5d$-derived surface state near the Fermi energy are related to a reconstruction of the (001) surface of DyNi resulting from missing Ni rows in the topmost atomic layer. The d-like surface state is a well-known phenomenon for metallic Dy(0001). Similar to the situation in rare-earth metals, it may influence the surface magnetic properties of thin DyNi films.

Electronic and crystalline structure at the surface of epitaxial films of DyNi grown on W(110)

Spin-polarized photoemission has developed into a versatile tool for the study of surface and thin film magnetism. In this review, we examine the methodology of the technique and its application to a number of different problems, including both valence band and core level studies. After a detailed review of spin-polarization measurement techniques and the related experimental requirements we consider in detail studies of the bulk properties both above and below the Curie temperature. This section also includes a discussion of observations relating to unique metastable phases obtained via epitaxial growth. The application of the technique to the study of surfaces, both clean and adsorbate covered, is reviewed. The report then examines, in detail, studies of the spin-polarized electronic structure of thin films and the related interfacial magnetism. Finally, observations of spin-polarized quantum well states in non-magnetic thin films are discussed with particular reference to their mediation of the oscillatory exchange coupling in related magnetic multilayers.

Spin Polarized Photoemission

We report on pronounced oscillations of the specular x-ray reflectivity as a function of deposited material in epitaxial growth of Ho on W(110). In specular geometry, the periods of these growth oscillations are found to scale inversely with the length of the scattering vector q . This behavior is shown to be characteristic for heteroepitaxial growth, while in homoepitaxy the oscillation period is independent of q . The q dependence has to be accounted for in growth studies with x rays, in particular when growth-oscillation periods are related to the number of deposited layers. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

q Dependence of the Growth-Oscillation Period of X-Ray Reflectivity in Heteroepitaxy: Ho/W(110)

The spectroscopic properties of elemental terbium, dysprosium, holmium, and erbium are investigated using first-principles calculations taking into account intra-atomic correlation effects. In order to describe the strongly localized f electrons together with the conduction bands, we have used the multiband Hubbard-I approximation to reproduce the multiplet features present in the experimental spectra. A comparison with available experimental data is made and the overall agreement is found to be good.
