High isolation and compact size microstrip diplexers designed with common resonator sections have been proposed. By exploiting the variable frequency response of the stepped-impedance resonator, resonators can be shared by the two filter channels of the desired diplexer if their fundamental and the first spurious resonant frequency are properly assigned. Size reduction are, therefore, achieved by introducing a few common resonator sections in the circuit. This concept has been verified by the experimental results of two diplexer circuits. One of the diplexers is composed of two three-pole parallel-coupled bandpass filters and the other is composed of two four-pole cross-coupled bandpass filters, which are formed by only five and six resonators, respectively. Both of them occupy extremely small areas while still keeping good isolations. Good agreements are also achieved between measurement and simulation.

Microstrip diplexers design with common resonator sections for compact size, but high isolation

This paper introduces a three-port microstrip multifrequency diplexer used in a phased-array transceiver system that employs band-stop filters with open-circuited stubs for band selection and separation. The diplexer is designed to take 10, 12, 19, and 21 GHz into port 1 and to separate 10 and 19 GHz to port 2 and 12 and 21 GHz to part 3 with minimal dispersion. The insertion loss for each frequency varies from 0.4 to 3.4 db and the return loss is better than 10 dB. The isolation between channels at the four frequencies is greater than 50 dB. Each passband created between adjacent stopbands has a bandwidth over 1 GHz. The microstrip diplexer is designed using periodic stubs that collectively have the advantages of low insertion loss, high isolation and rejection, wide-band performance on each channel, and easy fabrication. This type of diplexer has many applications in multifrequency transceivers for communication systems.

Wide-band low-loss high-isolation microstrip periodic-stub diplexer for multiple-frequency applications

This article describes a class of recently developed multiple-mode-resonator-based bandpass filters for ultra-wide-band (UWB) transmission systems. These filters have many attractive features, including a simple design, compact size, low loss and good linearity in the UWB, enhanced out-of-band rejection, and easy integration with other circuits/antennas. In this article, we present a variety of multiple-mode resonators with stepped-impedance or stub-loaded nonuniform configurations and analyze their properties based on the transmission line theory. Along with the frequency dispersion of parallel-coupled transmission lines, we design and implement various filter structures on planar, uniplanar, and hybrid transmission line geometries.

Multiple-resonator-based bandpass filters

Design methodologies of planar duplexer and triplexer consisting of bandpass filters (BPFs) using different tapped resonators are described. Firstly, we propose a planar duplexer consisting of BPFs using a tapped half-wavelength resonator and a tapped quarter-wavelength resonator. The duplexer is designed based on a classical filter design method with a narrow-band approximation and a tap-coupling method. The experimental duplexer is fabricated using coplanar-waveguide structures. Secondly, a planar triplexer consisting of three types of BPFs is described in a similar manner. The results of this study show that the design methodology is useful for realizing the high-performance planar duplexer and triplexer fabricated without increasing the number of elements.

Design methodologies of planar duplexers and triplexers by manipulating attenuation poles

Miniature microstrip stepped impedance resonator bandpass filters and diplexers for satellite mobile communications have been developed. A very high dielectric constant substrate (/spl epsiv//sub r/=89 and h=2 mm) is used. Experimental results show that an unloaded half wave resonator quality factor as high as 400 at 1.5 GHz, with such substrate, may be possible. The merit of this circuit lies in the simplicity of design procedure, the possibility of developing this filter with quite a variety of high dielectric constant substrate materials and the simplicity of simulation with most commercial software packages. A four resonator bandpass filter with 35 MHz bandwidth at 1.55 GHz was designed and implemented with this substrate. Based on this filter, a diplexer which meets satellite mobile communications performance has been developed. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Inherent limitations of the microstrip technology tend to reduce the operating possibilities of the different classes of well-known integrated band-pass filters. By choosing an appropriate technological process, some of these problems can be solved efficiently. In this paper, we present two original examples of microstrip band-pass filters for which significant improvements have been observed by using multi-layer thick-film technology. Firstly, thanks to the high coupling level thus achieved, a wideband microstrip end-coupled band-pass filters is presented. Then, the advantages of that particular process are illustrated by improving the frequency bandwidth rejection of a parallel coupled lines filter. Specific software was developed, and associated models were implemented on an HP-MDS© system. Experimental results are compared with theoretical responses.

Design of high performance band-pass filters by using multi-layer thick-film technology

In order to measure accurately the instantaneous real speed on the sea, a low cost Doppler radar has been developed in the W-band. The main parts of the device are a Gunn diode oscillator and a Schottky diode mixer integrated on the same printed circuit, on either side of the emission and reception system including a conical horn with a Fresnel zone plate, excited by the dipole antennas of emission and reception. The Doppler signal, which is obtained after mixing, must be in the order of tens of kHz.
