FACILITATING ALGORITHM VISUALIZATION CREATION AND ADOPTION IN EDUCATION Doctoral Dissertation

Algorithm Animations (AAs) portray the high-level dynamic operation of an algorithm. The computer science education community held great expectations that AA would assist students in understanding algorithms. However, many studies of the instructional effectiveness of AAs have produced inconclusive results. We investigated a number of issues pertinent to AA effectiveness: the study of AA user needs, user-centered design and the role of perception in AA. Existing algorithm animation systems typically have been designed without formal study of related teaching practices. We conducted an observational study of instructors teaching data structure and algorithm topics, focusing on activities involving the use of diagrams and algorithms. The results of this study were used to inform the user-centered design of SKA, the Support Kit for Animation. SKA combines interactive data structure diagram manipulation with flexible pseudocode execution, simple algorithm animation authoring support, a visual data structure library, and an animation engine designed for perceptual pacing and timing. The role of perception in AAs had not been formally considered in the past. We collaborated on a number of empirical studies to investigate this role, and the design of software to be used to conduct these studies. We found that some animation techniques can assist user perception and mapping in AA in some contexts, which will inform future AA design and studies.

When conducting Coastal Water Navigation, a ship's Navigating Officer (NavO) has multiple sources of data to consider. To obtain the information required to safely manoeuvre the ship, they make use of specialized equipment. The time spent interacting with the equipment is a risk, as it prevents them from visually monitoring the ever-changing maritime environment. Data visualization through Augmented Reality (AR) offers a way to obtain the information while maintaining a proper and effective lookout. Additionally, our research suggests that the information can be presented in new ways. We created a simulator that allows testing and evaluation of AR Navigation Aids (ARNAs). These visualizations were evaluated by subject matter experts through a user study. The user study suggests that ARNAs can improve maritime safety and assist in the conduct of navigation. 

AR visualization for coastal water navigation

The VizEval Suite* is an environment designed to support experimentation with and evaluation of program visualization attributes that affect the users ability to grasp essential concepts. In this paper, we describe the VizEval Suite and an initial experiment conducted both as a test-bed of the VizEval Suite and to study how perceptual/cognitive characteristics of the visualization affect the users understanding of the program visualization. VizEval is designed to simplify the creation and analysis of such studies. Our experimental results show that some perceptual/cognitive characteristics that help one task (e.g., detection of critical information) may harm another (e.g., localization of critical items), and vice versa.
