We describe updates to the \redmapper{} algorithm, a photometric red-sequence cluster finder specifically designed for large photometric surveys. The updated algorithm is applied to $150\,\mathrm{deg}^2$ of Science Verification (SV) data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), and to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR8 photometric data set. The DES SV catalog is locally volume limited, and contains 786 clusters with richness $\lambda>20$ (roughly equivalent to $M_{\rm{500c}}\gtrsim10^{14}\,h_{70}^{-1}\,M_{\odot}$) and $0.2<z<0.9$. The DR8 catalog consists of 26311 clusters with $0.08<z<0.6$, with a sharply increasing richness threshold as a function of redshift for $z\gtrsim 0.35$. The photometric redshift performance of both catalogs is shown to be excellent, with photometric redshift uncertainties controlled at the $\sigma_z/(1+z)\sim 0.01$ level for $z\lesssim0.7$, rising to $\sim0.02$ at $z\sim0.9$ in DES SV. We make use of \emph{Chandra} and \emph{XMM} X-ray and South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zeldovich data to show that the centering performance and mass--richness scatter are consistent with expectations based on prior runs of \redmapper{} on SDSS data. We also show how the \redmapper{} \photoz{} and richness estimates are relatively insensitive to imperfect star/galaxy separation and small-scale star masks.

The redMaPPer Galaxy Cluster Catalog From DES Science Verification Data


 We present the first cosmological study of a sample of eROSITA clusters, which were identified in the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS). In a joint selection on X-ray and optical observables, the sample contains 455 clusters within a redshift range of 0.1 < z < 1.2, of which 177 systems are covered by the public data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey that enables uniform weak-lensing cluster mass constraints. With minimal assumptions, at each cluster redshift we empirically model (1) the scaling relations between the cluster halo mass and the observables, which include the X-ray count rate, the optical richness, and the weak-lensing mass, and (2) the X-ray selection in terms of the completeness function $\mathcal {C}$. Using the richness distribution of the clusters, we directly measure the X-ray completeness and adopt those measurements as informative priors for the parameters of $\mathcal {C}$. In a blinded analysis, we obtain the cosmological constraints $\Omega _{\mathrm{m}}= 0.245^{+0.048}_{-0.058}$, $\sigma _{8}= 0.833^{+0.075}_{-0.063}$ and $S_{8}\equiv \sigma _{8}\left(\Omega _{\mathrm{m}}/0.3\right)^{0.3}= 0.791^{+0.028}_{-0.031}$ in a flat ΛCDM cosmology. Extending to a flat wCDM cosmology leads to the constraint on the equation of state parameter of the dark energy of w = −1.25 ± 0.47. The eFEDS constraints are in good agreement with the results from the Planck mission, the galaxy-galaxy lensing and clustering analysis of the Dark Energy Survey, and the cluster abundance analysis of the SPT-SZ survey at a level of ≲ 1σ. With the empirical modelling, this work presents the first fully self-consistent cosmological constraints based on a synergy between wide-field X-ray and weak lensing surveys.

Cosmological constraints from galaxy clusters and groups in the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey

The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), covering ~140 square degrees, was performed as part of the performance verification phase of the eROSITA telescope on board of the Russian-German satellite Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG). In this paper we present the optical follow-up of 542 X-ray extent selected galaxy group and cluster candidates providing redshifts and cluster confirmation for the full sample. We use optical imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program and from the Legacy Survey to run the cluster redshift and confirmation tool MCMF as well as the optical cluster finder CAMIRA at the location of the X-ray candidates. While providing redshift estimates for all 542 candidates, we construct an optically confirmed sample of 477 clusters and groups with a residual contamination of 6%. Of these, 470 (98.5%) are confirmed using MCMF and 7 systems are added through cross matching with spectroscopic group catalogs. Using observable to observable scaling and the applied confirmation threshold, we predict 8 +/- 2 real systems have been excluded with the MCMF cut required to build this low contamination sample. This number is in good agreement with the 7 systems recovered through cross matching. Thus, we expect those 477 systems to include >99% of all true clusters in the candidate list. Using an MCMF independent method, we confirm the catalog contamination of the confirmed subsample to be 6 +/- 3% and find 17 +/- 3% contamination for the full X-ray sample. The estimated contamination of the fulls sample is in agreement with MCMF dependent estimate of ~17% and the expectation from dedicated X-ray simulations of ~20%. We further present a sample of optically selected merging cluster candidates.

The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS): Optical confirmation, redshifts, and properties of the cluster and group catalog

Cosmological inference from cluster number counts is systematically limited by the accuracy of the mass calibration, i.e. the empirical determination of the mapping between cluster selection observables and halo mass. In this work we demonstrate a method to quantitatively determine the bias and uncertainties in weak-lensing mass calibration. To this end, we extract a library of projected matter density profiles from hydrodynamical simulations. Accounting for shear bias and noise, photometric redshift uncertainties, mis-centering, cluster member contamination, cluster morphological diversity, and line-of-sight projections, we produce a library of shear profiles. Fitting a one-parameter model to these profiles, we extract the so-called \emph{weak lensing mass} $M_\text{WL}$. Relating the weak-lensing mass to the halo mass from gravity-only simulations with the same initial conditions as the hydrodynamical simulations allows us to estimate the impact of hydrodynamical effects on cluster number counts experiments. Creating new shear libraries for $\sim$1000 different realizations of the systematics, provides a distribution of the parameters of the weak-lensing to halo mass relation, reflecting their systematic uncertainty. This result can be used as a prior for cosmological inference. We also discuss the impact of the inner fitting radius on the accuracy, and determine the outer fitting radius necessary to exclude the signal from neighboring structures. Our method is currently being applied to different Stage~III lensing surveys, and can easily be extended to Stage~IV lensing surveys.

Calibration of bias and scatter involved in cluster mass measurements using optical weak gravitational lensing

The evolution of the cluster mass function traces the growth of linear density perturbations, providing valuable insights into the growth of structures, the nature of dark matter, and the cosmological parameters governing the Universe. The primary science goal of eROSITA, on board the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) mission, is to constrain cosmology through the evolution of the cluster mass function. In this paper, we present a set of cosmological constraints obtained from 5259 clusters of galaxies detected over an area of 12791 deg 2 in the western Galactic hemisphere of eROSITA’s first All-Sky Survey (eRASS1). The common footprint region (4968 deg 2 ) between the eROSITA Survey and Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the Hyper Supreme Camera (HSC) survey is used for calibration of the scaling between X-ray count rate of the clusters and their total mass through measurements of their weak gravitational lensing signal. The eRASS1 cluster abundances constrain the ΛCDM parameters, namely, the energy density of the total matter to Ω m = 0.29 −0.02 +0.01 and the normalization of the density fluctuations to σ 8 = 0.88 ± 0.02, and their combination yields S 8 = σ 8 (Ω m /0.3) 0.5 = 0.86 ± 0.01. These results are consistent and achieve at a similar precision with state-of-the-art cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements. Furthermore, the eRASS1 cosmological experiment places a most stringent upper limit on the summed masses of left-handed light neutrinos to ∑ m v &lt; 0.43 eV (95% confidence interval) from cluster number counts alone. By combining eRASS1 cluster abundance measurements with CMB- and ground-based neutrino oscillation experiments, we measured the summed neutrino masses to be ∑ m v = 0.09 −0.02 +0.04 eV or ∑ m v = 0.12 −0.02 +0.03 eV, assuming a normal or inverted mass hierarchy scenario for neutrino eigenstates. The eRASS1 cluster abundances significantly improve the constraints on the dark energy equation of state parameter to w = −1.12 ± 0.12. When ∑ m v and w are left free, we find consistent results with the concordance ΛCDM cosmology. Our results from the first All-Sky Survey improve the cosmological constraints by over a factor of 5 to 9 over the previous cluster surveys, establishing cluster abundance measurements for precision cosmology and setting the stage for deeper eROSITA All-Sky Surveys, as well as for future cluster abundance experiments. 

The SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey

We construct and validate the selection function of the MARD-Y3 galaxy cluster sample. This sample was selected through optical follow-up of the 2nd ROSAT faint source catalogue with Dark Energy Survey year 3 data. The selection function is modelled by combining an empirically constructed X-ray selection function with an incompleteness model for the optical follow-up. We validate the joint selection function by testing the consistency of the constraints on the X-ray flux-mass and richness-mass scaling relation parameters derived from different sources of mass information: (1) cross-calibration using South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) clusters, (2) calibration using number counts in X-ray, in optical and in both X-ray and optical while marginalizing over cosmological parameters, and (3) other published analyses. We find that the constraints on the scaling relation from the number counts and SPT-SZ cross-calibration agree, indicating that our modelling of the selection function is adequate. Furthermore, we apply a largely cosmology independent method to validate selection functions via the computation of the probability of finding each cluster in the SPT-SZ sample in the MARD-Y3 sample and vice versa. This test reveals no clear evidence for MARD-Y3 contamination, SPT-SZ incompleteness or outlier fraction. Finally, we discuss the prospects of the techniques presented here to limit systematic selection effects in future cluster cosmological studies.
