The mobile agent concept grows out of three earlier technologies: process migration [5], remote evaluation [7], and mobile objects [3]—all developed to improve on remote procedure calling (RPC) for distributed programming. Early systems supporting process migration allowed an entire address space to be moved from one computer to another. One goal of this mechanism was to reduce network bandwidth (compared to RPC) when multiple RPC calls are needed to execute an application. While process migration allowed an entire process to be transferred to a remote host, this mechanism did not allow an easy way to return data back to the source node without the entire process returning as well (see Figure 1). Next came remote evaluation programming, allowing one computer to send another computer a request in the form of a program (rather than an entire process address space). The remote computer receiving such a request executes the program referenced in the request within its own local address space and returns the results to the sending computer. Workflow systems based on mobile software agents improve overall flexibility and adaptability. The design of such systems does however, require that some attention be paid to performance tuning. The paper describes a decentralized agent control and management strategy that prevents system flooding and maintains good overall system throughput. Control of the system is divided among the following three controlling entities: the Workflow Service Broker (WSB), Agent, and Agent Pool. The WSB maintains information about what services are available on the network. The Agent maintains its itinerary, current state and travel log; this information is used in conjunction with the information from the WSB to direct routing of the Agent. The Agent Pool maintains information about the number of agents in the system, and the overall system load. We discuss the implementation of this control strategy in a workflow application called Autopilot, which is a heterogeneous text processing workflow system where the elements are of unknown complexity and size, and where the potential processing paths through the routing domain are initially unknown. We discuss performance tuning aspects of the system and offer conclusions on such issues as agent pooling, payload simplification, object reference vs. object movement, and service co-location.

traditional centralized network management approach presents severe efficiency and scalability limitations in large scale networks. The process of data collection and analysis typically involves huge transfers of management data to the manager which consumes considerable network bandwidth and causes bottlenecks at the manager side. Mobile agent technology provides an effective solution to alleviate this burden by distributing the management functionality over the network elements. A Mobile Agent has the ability to autonomously move among network elements to perform the required tasks locally. Thus, the code is transferred to the data location instead of moving the entire data to the manager's site. The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using mobile agents to overcome the limitations of the centralized structure. Focusing on the network performance management functional area, a prototype is developed to assess the effectiveness of a distributed mobile-agent-based network management system. The developed prototype installs itself automatically on remote machines and periodically checks their software and hardware status. Experiments are done to measure the network traffic volume when managing a typical network. Practical measurements are compared for the traffic generated by both the developed prototype and the current centralized network management standard (SNMP). This comparison confirms that mobile- agent-based management employs much less traffic than the centralized system. An estimation of the required management delays is provided for both sequential- and parallel- dispatching of the mobile agents.

Mobile Agent Framework for Distributed Network Performance Management

Currently public networks have an enormous number of computers capable of providing many services. Autonomous mobile agents are being used to access their information sources. These agents are modeled in the context of network simulation as mobile network processes. The paper demonstrates that distributed mobile agents can be simulated effectively using C++ over CSIM. C++ over CSIM achieves the clarity and logic of agent based simulation for network services. Inheritance and specialization under object orientation allow the design and reuse of simulation objects. This combination facilitates rather straightforward simulation designs that are scalable, accurate, flexible and generalizable. The design for such large scale simulation is sketched and the run time behavior of the simulator is analyzed.

Simulating agent based processing in an ADS using C++ SIM

With the continuing exponential growth of the Internet and the more recent growth of business Intranets, the commercial world is becoming increasingly aware of the problem of electronic information overload. This has encouraged interest in developing agents/softbots that can act as electronic personal assistants and can develop and adapt representations of users information needs, commonly known as profiles. As the result of collaborative research with Friends of the Earth, a leading environmental campaigning organization, we have developed a general purpose information classification agent architecture and are applying it to the problem of document classification and routing. Collaboration with Friends of the Earth allows us to test our ideas in a non-academic context involving high volumes of documents. We use the technique of genetic programming (GP), (Koza & Rice 1992), to evolve classifying agents. This is a novel approach for document classification, where each agent evolves a parse-tree representation of a user's particular information need. The other unusual features of our research are the longevity of our agents and the fact that they undergo a continual training process; feedback from the user enables the agent to adapt to the user's long-term information requirements.

Self-directed mobile software agents are a comparatively recent architectural design model. Mobile software agents, coupled with two other design metaphors, Place (or Service Provider) and Trader (or Yellow Pages Directory), can be used to construct processing architectures which are scalable, flexible, and extensible. Certain workflow problems (text processing and dissemination, claims processing) in which the potential processing paths through a routing domain are initially indeterminate seem especially well suited to an Agent-Place-Trader design architecture. This paper motivates the architecture with a description of challenges inherent in the functional requirements of a text processing and dissemination system. The paper continues with a description of our prototypes design, implementation, and object oriented tools used. An analysis of the benefits and limitations of using various agent systems in conjunction with the C++ and Java programming languages is presented. The authors draw conclusions regarding architectures for dynamic distributed processing in general and workflow problems in particular.
