A parallel beam of charged projectiles, reflected by a static atomic row inevitably exhibits a spread in outgoing transverse energy. However, above a certain critical distance of approach, Pc' the dispersion of the transverse energy of the outgoing particles around Eψ2 in (transverse energy of entering particles) turns out to become exceedingly small. In the present investigation, analytical formulae to determine Pc and the corresponding ψc are derived for axial channeling along static primitive rows and rows with a basis consisting of two different equidistant atoms, two equal but not equidistant atoms, or two different and not equidistant atoms per periodic length. A plot for a convenient evaluation of ψc and Pc is given. Previous equations for ψc and Pc and the present results are examined and compared with computer calculations. In channeling swift charged projectiles are utilized as versatile probes for solid state properties, with applications in nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics. In a review the development of this field—15 years after its fortuitous discovery—is presented. The outlines are: Introduction and principles; Flux distribution; Dechanneling; Blocking; Classical scattering versus quantum diffraction; Negative particle channeling; Consequences and applications (energy loss, ranges, radiation damage, interaction rates, lattice locations, nuclear lifetimes, cluster ions as channeled projectiles).

Channeling—The lattice steering of swift charged particles through crystalline solids

The channeling behavior of 1-MeV deuterons in Nbo crystals has been studied for principal axial and planar directions. Rutherford backscattering (d-yield) and 16 O(d, p)17O reaction (p-yield) are used to monitor niobium and oxygen atoms, respectively. The half-angular width and the minimum yields of dip curves in the d. and p-yields agree well with a calculation by Gemmell and Mikkelson's formula. For the (111) planar direction, double peaks appear in the p-yield curve at angles ±0.18°. The peak profiles are compared with a calculation based on the continuum model assuming statistical equilibrium.
