Influence of explicit higher-order thinking skills instruction on students’ learning of linguistics

Educational institutions are required to prepare competent and competitive pre-service teacher graduates who have skills according to the needs of the 21st century. This study aims to find the effect of blended Project-Based Learning (PjBL) integrated with 21st-century skills on higher-order thinking skills of students as pre-service biology teachers on immunology. This research is an experimental study with a mixed method, in which the qualitative observation data used a questionnaire with self-assessment and peer assessment methods supported by experimental data using the HOTS instrument analyzed quantitatively. The application of blended PjBL integrated with 21st-century skills used a quasi-experimental research method with a quantitative descriptive approach. Pre-service teachers in this study are still studying at educational institutions, especially teacher faculty, and categorized as pre-service teachers. The research sample was students taking the immunology course in the Biology Education Study Program. They were 57 students from IAIN Palangka Raya, 60 students from Universitas Palangka Raya, and 83 students from Universitas Negeri Malang. Student grouping based on the initial ability of HOTS is carried out in all groups from which the student sample is referred to as a cluster. The total sample of 200 people was then grouped into three groups based on their basic abilities, namely low-level class, medium-level class, and high-level class. The study results proved that the blended PjBL integrated with 21st-century skills significantly affected students' high-level thinking skills based on the paired sample test (Sig. 2-tailed 0.0000.05). The mean value in the experimental group (75.53) and the control group (56.35) strengthens the data significance of students' higher-order thinking skills based on the N-Gain value and the independent sample T-test. The findings of this study are that blended PjBL integrated with 21st-century skills can increase HOTS on indicators of evaluating (78.15) and creating (79.21). This blended learning integration can be used as an innovative learning model solution to increase pre-service biology teachers' higher-order thinking skills according to the demands of 21st-century skills.

Berpikir kritis merupakan salah satu keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi yang dibutuhkan dalam pengembangan keterampilan abad ke-21 (21st Century Skill). Pendidikan sebagai salah satu usaha mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa menempatkan kemampuan berpikir sebagai kompetensi penting. Tujuan dari sistem pendidikan adalah membentuk orang-orang terdidik yang mandiri dan dapat berpikir efektif serta kritis. Setiap individu membutuhkan keterampilan berpikir kritis agar berhasil memecahkan masalah dalam situasi sulit. Akar dari pemikiran kritis sama kunonya dengan dimulainya pemikiran-pemikiran filsafat. Sekitar 2500 tahun yang lalu, Sokrates menemukan metode penyelidikan pertanyaan. Konsep berpikir kritis kemudian mengalami perkembangan hingga pada zaman saat ini. Perkembangan konsep berpikir kritis dari sudut pandang filsafat menjadi penting dipelajari dengan tujuan agar mendapatkan pemahaman holistik mengenai kerangka berpikir kritis. Metode yang digunakan untuk menyusun artikel ini adalah studi kepustakaan. Beberapa definisi dari filsuf bersifat saling menguatkan maupun saling melengkapi. Konsep berpikir kritis dalam pandangan filsafat menekankan pada sifat, sikap dan kualitas berpikir kritis. Konsep berpikir kritis menekankan pada delapan hal yaitu: analisis, penalaran, inferensi, membandingkan, formulasi hipotesis, sintesis (membuat ide baru), pengujian dan kesimpulan komperhensif.

Kajian Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis (Critical Thinking Skill) Dari Sudut Pandang Filsafat

This study aimed to investigating the effect of problem-based learning with char-acter emphasis toward the students’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and characters. This study an experimental research using the single factor independ-ent group design which conducted on secondary school in Mataram - Indonesia. The treatment was given to three independent randomly selected groups, namely Problem-Based Learning with Character Emphasis (PBL-CE), Problem Based-Learning (PBL), and Regular Learning (RL). The data of the students’ HOTS were collected through essay tests and the data of the students’ characters were collected through self-assessment sheets, and analyzed using MANOVA. The results showed that the highest mean score for HOTS was found in the PBL-CE group, its was significantly different with RL group, and not significantly differ-ent with PBL group. Meanwhile, for the average score of student characters, the PBL-CE group scored higher and was significantly different from the other two groups (PBL and RL). The generalization of the study results has shown that there is an effect of problem-based learning with character emphasis on students' higher order thinking skills and character.

The Effect of Problem-Based Learning with Character Emphasis toward Students’ Higher-Order Thinking Skills and Characters

Higher-order thinking is confirmed as the basic requirements in the era of knowledge age, both in learning and the workplace. Integrating information technology into the classroom is a common method to improve learners’ higher-order thinking by changing the environment. Smart classroom is a technology-enriched environment, in which technological affordances are used to facilitate learners’ higher-order thinking activities. Higher-order thinking is influenced by learner factors such as learning strategies and attitudes, which have changed in the smart classroom environment. This study investigated how learner factors interactively affected higher-order thinking in the smart classroom environment. A total of 784 pupils in 16 classes randomly selected from 9 primary schools in central China participated in this study. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that learners’ higher-order thinking was strongly and directly affected by learning style and internet attitude, but not by learning motivation. Learning style partly mediated the positive relationship between internet attitude and higher-order thinking. A deeper learning experience should be provided with them, which can change their internet attitude and improve their higher-order thinking. This meaningful, coherent learning experience should be implemented to make learners’ internet attitude, learning motivation and learning style consistent, so as to improve higher-order thinking more effectively.

The effects of learner factors on higher-order thinking in the smart classroom environment

The study determined the relationship between higher order thinking skills (HOTS) of students and the academic performance in physics. The research was conducted at Benguet State University during the school year 2010‐2011 and respondents were students enrolled in Physics. Results show that 49.5% of female students have average HOTS level on analysis while 54.4% of male students have below average level. On comparison, almost 50% of both male and female students have below average level while more than half of male and female students have average level on inference. Almost half of male students and female students have average level of HOTS on evaluation. Male and female students have similar level of HOTS on all four areas. Moreover the HOTS level on analysis, comparison and evaluation significantly influence the physics performance of male students while the HOTS level on analysis, inference and evaluation significantly influence the physics performance of female students.
