Salinity–mineral nutrient relations in horticultural crops

Polylactide (PLA), a biodegradable aliphatic polyester, has been studied extensively for its wide applications in various fields from food packaging to interior materials for automobiles. One of PLA's advantages is that the raw material, lactic acid can be derived from renewable resources, which makes PLA very attractive for the packaging and considered as green packaging. Although, the cost of PLA is relatively higher compared to petroleum based packaging materials and it is predicted that the price will go down after commercial success of the process. This paper presents a review on polylactide with focus on its chemistry, synthesis, properties, and applications. Plasticization effect on PLA, sorption isotherm and mechanical properties of PLA based packaging materials have been discussed. Salt affected soils limit crop yields around the world. Knowledge of how nutrient availability is affected in plants growing on salt affected soils is important in adopting appropriate management practices to satisfy plants’ nutritional requirements and improve yields to meet food demands of increasing world populations. In the salt affected environment plants required to absorb essential nutrients from a dilute source in the presence of highly concentrated nonessential nutrients. Nutrient uptake and use efficiency in salt affected soils is low due to salt stress and negative interactions with cations and anions present in high concentrations. Hence, a higher amount of nutrients is necessary in salt affected soils compared to normal soils. Biological nitrogen fixation is also adversely affected in legumes grown on salt affected soils. Nutrient bioavailability in salt affected soils

The effect of salinity in inducing soil macro and micronutrient deficiencies that can decrease crop growth was evaluated in a corn (Zea mays L.) field located in east central Wyoming. In this study water soluble Na was found to be a better predictor of salinity than pH and other cations. Soil saturated paste extracts had electrical conductivities that were negatively correlated with soil total K, Cu, Fe, and Mn. Total N, NO3‐N, PO4‐P, Zn, pH, and water soluble Na, Ca, and Mg of the soil were positively correlated with EC. Significant positive relationships existed between soil EC and N, P, Mo, and Zn, and negative relationships with K, Cu, Fe, and Mn of corn leaves and kernels. Concentrations of nutrients in the kernels were positively correlated with corresponding nutrient concentrations in the leaves and with AB‐DTPA extractable soil nutrients.
